1.0 out of 5 stars There are better alternatives out there...that don't blow up, 13 Feb 2006
    By A Customer
This review is from: GEAR4 / PodGear HouseParty - Active stereo speaker system and sync/charge dock for iPod, iPod mini, nano and Shuffle (Electronics)
My first set of these speakers overheated and started smoking less than a month after its first use.

I plugged in my Ipod as you normally would and noticed that it wasn't charging it like it should be. I had a look around the speakers and nothing was suspect so I plugged my Ipod back in and it miraculously started charging it. Thinking everything was fine i left it to play some tunes. Out of the corner of my eye I notice the blue light that illuminates the Ipod to be flickering and went over to investigate. By the time I got to it the sound was crackling and there was white smoke coming from the back of the speakers and I unplugged the whole system immediately. I am just glad I was in the room at the time as if I hadn't been, I'm a little worried there wouldn't be much of my bedroom left!

The manufacturers kindly sent me another system...which don't work (it says that it's charging the Ipod, but it's not).

I will not be buying any PodGear equipment again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good enough for the price, 15 Jan 2006
This review is from: GEAR4 / PodGear HouseParty - Active stereo speaker system and sync/charge dock for iPod, iPod mini, nano and Shuffle (Electronics)
I don't how well it works for other ipods, but my 20gb works great with it. Sound quality is pretty good, if you want top quality though you might want to spend a bit more. For my purposes (general listening at home) it suits me fine. Sometimes it can get (for want of a better word) 'thumpy' when I put it on loud, but with a bit of alteration to the ipods equality settings this goes away, more or less. Other than that the sound quality is pretty good.

I like it, it does me just fine. If you just want something so you can listen to your music outloud, without caring too much about it not being perfect quality this will probably do you.

    1.0 out of 5 stars Smoking!, 14 Oct 2006

I've had two, which I wanted to use on holiday, therefore infrequently. Both started smoking badly, one when it wasn't even turned on. The first I returned to the on-line shop and got a replacement very quickly & efficiently. The second was outside warranty, although used only three or four times. I complained to Gear4, who couldn't even bother to reply. TO BE AVOIDED!
