SmartDock Alarm Clock Radio for iPhone or iPod touch
The AlarmDock Halo is no normal alarm clock radio. With two drivers and a passive bass radiator it does not compromise on sound quality, yet its small footprint and elegant design makes it perfect for the bedside table.
The AlarmDock Halo includes a dimmable blue LCD display which has been designed to ensure that the clock is visible without keeping you awake. The AlarmDock Halo also includes an FM radio with 5 programmable preset stations and 2 alarms that can each be easily set for you to wake up to the radio, your iPod / iPhone or a simple buzzer. The clock can be set to either 12-hour or 24-hour displays, and includes a Sleep countdown timer to allow you to fall asleep to your music. There is also a Snooze control feature, including a large snooze button - an easy target for those dark mornings.
The app enhanced functionality means you can make your speaker do more with the SmartDock app, a free download from the App Store.

App-enhanced Features
FM Radio – Steel
Automatically find all FM stations in your area by the press of a single button. Your FM stations get stored in the app, including their RDS name (where available) and can be reordered at will. Instead of constantly tuning up and down, just press the name of the station you want to listen to.
FM Radio - Digital
The SmartDock app features two display styles: Steel and Digital. Switching from one style to another is instant.
Set Alarms
Create alarms wherever you are with SmartDock’s easy-to-use interface. Once you are done, simply dock your iPhone, launch SmartDock and your alarms will be synced with the speaker. Set the alarm in the office and when you dock your phone it will automatically update. Create as many alarms as you need and choose to wake up to your playlists or normal buzzer.
Flip Clock Alarm
The SmartDock app offers 4 styles of clock, which can be used while playing music or FM radio. Alarm times are shown on your iPhone screen and if your speaker does not include alarm clock functionality, SmartDock will add it.
Music Player
SmartDock includes a built-in music player to access your iPod library. You can search for songs, browse playlists and even display album artwork in full screen and without closing the app. The music player also contains a visualiser.

The key thing to understand about this product is that it was designed with an iPhone/iPod Touch as PART of the product. Assuming you have an iPod Nano, or some other non-Apple media player, here's what you get:
- an FM radio, complete with trailing wire aerial out the back of the device
- a basic alarm clock, with all the usual fiddle button presses to select different modes and set times, etc.
- an adequate speaker, OK for talk radio or waking you up, but hardly hi-fi
- a reasonably stylish unit, which takes up a small footprint on your bedside table
- a fairly useless clock display, which requires constant adjustment to be visible in bright daylight or subtle at night, and is not visible at any angle other than directly in front.
However, if you have an iPhone or iPod Touch, and you download the free 'SmartDock' app, it becomes a different beast. Via the app, you get the following features:
- clock time is automatically set to sync with iPhone/iPod (no fiddly button presses)
- iPhone/iPod acts as graphical display and controller for the radio, including: auto-scanning and logging radio stations for easy tuning, display of station name and other info (subject to RDS broadcast)
- easy setting of multiple alarms, including different times by day of week (although only the first two in the list will be active - so some shuffling required if you have more than two different times you get up)
- some 'fun' sounds to wake up to, including African drums, garden birds, thunderstorm and trumpet blast
- many options for controlling alarms: volume, choice of radio/iPod playlist/alarm sound, snooze delay, number of repeats
- full access to all music on the player, including podcasts
- ability to navigate all of the above via a small remote control (although this is annoyingly marked with grey symbols which become invisible in low light)
In summary, I would praise Gear4 for the degree of integration they offer for the iPhone/iPod touch owner. Some real thought has gone into making the whole thing work together and be more than the sum of the parts. However, at the final count, this is only an FM radio and basic speaker in a stylish case with some clever software to spice it up. If you have a Nano, or non-Apple player, forget it.
If you have an iPhone/iPod Touch, the question is how much you value the integrated touch screen/alarm/radio functionality. After all, for not much more, you can get a proper stereo dock (with basic alarm function) and much better sound, or a digital radio/alarm without the iPod integration.
Delivered on time, really easy to set up and my daughter is really happy with it. Only minor problem was that there wasn't an appropriate dock adapter for the 4th Gen Touch. Rang Gear 4 and they explained that the Halo was launched before the 4th Gen, so they posted me an appropriate free adapter without any fuss.
