I never normally do reviews for items I buy but I've read quite a lot of comments on here about issues people were having and I wanted to help those who have already bought this or may considering buying this.

The first issue I had after using the box for the first time was the subtitles were enabled by default on all channels. This can be permantly disabled by clicking the menu button on the remote scroll to the menu headed 'language options' and click the subtitles to be 'invisible'. This permantly disables them on all channels whether you turn the box on or off. Don't just click options on the remote and disable the subtitles that was as it only disables it for that channel you're on at the time and then enables again when you change channel or turn the box on and off.

Issue 2 was the sound just on the HD channels was alot quieter compared to the SD channels and when you flicked between them you had to adjust the volume level up and down.

Issue 3 was again just on the HD channels the picture would be really jerky especially when the camera was scrolling left and right this was most noticeable on the EURO 2012 football matches, really annoying. I checked my signal strength by clicking menu button on the remote then 'Diagnostics' menu and 'Signal Meter'. This gives you the strength of the signal for the channel you're on at the time. For the HD channels it was signal strength 54% and signal quality 46% compared to the SD channels which had over 60% for strength and 100% for quality. I guessed the issue with the HD sound and picture was down to the signal not being strong enough so I purchased a TV amplifier but it made no difference at all.

1.0 out of 5 stars Nice box poor quality 16 May 2012
I brought this item due to low cost for HD freeview and positive reviews online. I brought the box in February from maplins online and was very happy with the product. A smart looking box with an easy to use interface. Picture and sound quality were both fine. After about eight weeks useage, I noticed that the box no longer displayed any graphics or menu's, ie no volume indication , no channel/programme information, no ability to retune. I contacted Maplins support who were great. I returned the faulty item freepost and they supplied a brand new replacement unit. After 4 weeks, my replacement unit developed the same fault as its predecessor. I contacted Maplins and stated my preference for a refund, which i received within three days. This item was used for the TV in my bedroom, so it was only used a couple of times a week at most. I was either very unlucky to be the recipient of two units suffering from exactly the same defect, or the item has a inherent design flaw. In conclusion I wouldn't buy an i-Can set top box but i would use Maplins again for their customer support.

i-Can GBR2851T Freeview HD Digital Receiver with BBC iPlayerDelivered in 4 days on free delivery in unsealed display box but seemed in good condition.

Bought this on strength of good reviews in Amazon and good price (£35). Worked well initially with brilliant picture quality esp in HD channels - well pleased, until it stopped responding to the remote control and basically 'seized up'. Tried rebooting several times without success - was so disappointed.

Have requested return and refund to Richer Sounds and I may re-order if they are responsive in handling the return, this is the first time I've bought thru them.

Take care with placing it on heat sensitive surfaces, it gets pretty warm after a few minutes in operation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent set-top box 28 Nov 2011

This is a top quality receiver that performs way better than the cheap short-lived ones normally available. Even the packaging looks classy and the box contains a good quality HDMI cable which will transmit both sound and vision to any modern tv with an HDMI socket. There are other connectors on the back but no cables are provided for these. I've connected this to an ancient Sony tv using a SCART cable and it works perfectly. Changing channels is almost instantaneous, with virtually none of the usual annoying digital lag. Best of all, with a wired ethernet connection to my broadband router, BBC iPlayer relays programs with no picture break-up or freezing. I can't comment on the HD picture quality as I haven't tried it yet.

Installation was very straightforward but I had to do it twice, as the printed instructions look clear but are slightly misleading and I made some mistakes. The first section on "How to set up your receiver" says connect your receiver to the mains and warns "DO NOT USE THE REMOTE CONTROL OF THE RECEIVER", but wait until the screen explaining main use of the arrow buttons appears. I waited a looong time and no such screen appeared after the welcome screen. Eventually pressed OK on the remote and installation continued normally. There was a question about an aerial amplifier with no indication what this meant (the correct answer seems to be "No"). Another tricky point is that if you press the DISP (Display) button inadvertently, the tv picture will disappear. This caused endless head-scratching until I logged on to the FAQ section of their website and found that the answer is to press DISP repeatedly until the picture reappears. TV and radio channels were installed automatically, and numbered sequentially and logically.
