I never normally do reviews for items I buy but I've read quite a lot of comments on here about issues people were having and I wanted to help those who have already bought this or may considering buying this.

The first issue I had after using the box for the first time was the subtitles were enabled by default on all channels. This can be permantly disabled by clicking the menu button on the remote scroll to the menu headed 'language options' and click the subtitles to be 'invisible'. This permantly disables them on all channels whether you turn the box on or off. Don't just click options on the remote and disable the subtitles that was as it only disables it for that channel you're on at the time and then enables again when you change channel or turn the box on and off.

Issue 2 was the sound just on the HD channels was alot quieter compared to the SD channels and when you flicked between them you had to adjust the volume level up and down.

Issue 3 was again just on the HD channels the picture would be really jerky especially when the camera was scrolling left and right this was most noticeable on the EURO 2012 football matches, really annoying. I checked my signal strength by clicking menu button on the remote then 'Diagnostics' menu and 'Signal Meter'. This gives you the strength of the signal for the channel you're on at the time. For the HD channels it was signal strength 54% and signal quality 46% compared to the SD channels which had over 60% for strength and 100% for quality. I guessed the issue with the HD sound and picture was down to the signal not being strong enough so I purchased a TV amplifier but it made no difference at all.

I brought this item due to low cost for HD freeview and positive reviews online. I brought the box in February from maplins online and was very happy with the product. A smart looking box with an easy to use interface. Picture and sound quality were both fine. After about eight weeks useage, I noticed that the box no longer displayed any graphics or menu's, ie no volume indication , no channel/programme information, no ability to retune. I contacted Maplins support who were great. I returned the faulty item freepost and they supplied a brand new replacement unit. After 4 weeks, my replacement unit developed the same fault as its predecessor. I contacted Maplins and stated my preference for a refund, which i received within three days. This item was used for the TV in my bedroom, so it was only used a couple of times a week at most. I was either very unlucky to be the recipient of two units suffering from exactly the same defect, or the item has a inherent design flaw. In conclusion I wouldn't buy an i-Can set top box but i would use Maplins again for their customer support.

i-Can GBR2851T Freeview HD Digital Receiver with BBC iPlayerDelivered in 4 days on free delivery in unsealed display box but seemed in good condition.

Bought this on strength of good reviews in Amazon and good price (£35). Worked well initially with brilliant picture quality esp in HD channels - well pleased, until it stopped responding to the remote control and basically 'seized up'. Tried rebooting several times without success - was so disappointed.

Have requested return and refund to Richer Sounds and I may re-order if they are responsive in handling the return, this is the first time I've bought thru them.

Take care with placing it on heat sensitive surfaces, it gets pretty warm after a few minutes in operation.

After checking various reviews I bought this one. It is indeed excellent compared with rubbish cheap set-top boxes which usually have terrible programme guides / slow etc. A few salient points if you are buying this to use with old portable tv's via scart lead (now that analogue has been switched off) and want to do it painlessly:

1) Firstly, connect to a modern HD tv with the (included in the box) HDMI cable. Then switch it on, follow the installation process; install channels etc.
2) Set aspect ratio to 4:3 (not 16:9 which it is originally set to)
3) Use the 'DISP' button to cycle through the diplay outputs until you get to 576i - that is the one you need (initially it is set to 1080p)

You can now disconnect from your modern tv, and plug it into your old tv using a scart lead (& put the portable aerial cable into the i-can, not the telly). It should now work properly on your old scart-lead tv using a portable aerial.

After you've done all that I would recommend updating the firmware via a usb (memory stick). To do this:

*edit* (I can't seem to insert the direct download link - presumably amazon don't allow it. You need to go to this page: i-can tv website (use google to find it); you MUST select Country>United Kingdom at the top of the page (otherwise you won't find the correct part for the ican 2851); then 'Help' tab; and there you will see the download link in Step 1 for the ican 2851).

STEP 1: click on [..* see edit above *..] and save the software upgrade file on a USB key (a memory stick)
STEP 2: plug your USB key into the USB connector located on the rear panel of your receiver
STEP 3: go to the MAIN MENU > INSTALLATION > USB UPGRADE, then follow the instructions. The upgrade will start automatically.
