Warning to readers: The Gateway and the other books in the Harbinger of Doom series explore religious and political topics that some may consider highly controversial. Proceed at your own risk. The author has written that, "The nature of good and evil is explored in ways that led to the Saga's banning for either religious or political reasons in much of Western Europe for centuries."

The Gateway
is a novella length version (approximately 25,000 words) of the first volume of the epic Harbinger of Doom series. The full length version of the first volume is entitled Gateway to Nifleheim (approximate length 66,000 words).

Praise for The Gateway by Glenn G. Thater

"Glenn Thater's, The Gateway, is a masterfully crafted epic fantasy about the ages old struggle between good and evil." ---- Carol Marrs Phipps, author of Elf Killers
"...as good as any fantasy tale you will read, it honors the tradition, and adds to our lore a story so good, so well told, I hope it will be remembered forever."  ----- Rai Aren, co-author of Secret of the Sands.
"...a must read for all fans of classic sword and sorcery. A blend of howard, moorcock, wagner, with a twist of lovecraft. Well written and hugely entertaining." ---- Jimmyonly (an Amazon reviewer)

In
The Gateway, Glenn G. Thater transports us to an age of high adventure where knights battle supernatural horrors, magic is real but hidden, and the line between good and evil is all too thin.
This introduction to the epic Harbinger of Doom series is certain to delight fantasy fans everywhere.
The Harbinger of Doom saga centers around one Lord Angle Theta, an enigmatic warrior of unknown origins and mystical power. No mortal man is his match in battle. No sorcery can contain or confound him. No scholar or sage can outwit him. But for all his skills, he is but one of us; a man, a human, who shares our faults, our dreams, and our ambitions. He boldly strides across the land, fearless, peerless, and cloaked in mystery; all his will bent on righting such wrongs as he deems fit.
Until the day the Gateway opened and turned the world on its head. On that fateful day, Korrgonn came and washed away our dreams. And his outre' realm of Nifleheim set its unholy mark upon our world and claimed it for their own. Only Theta and his companions see our end coming- the end of civilization, the end of the world of man.

But no man, not even our greatest hero, can stand against the Lords of Nifleheim and the dark armies at their command. Fiends that infiltrate unseen within our ranks, that tear down our temples and our traditions; that devour us from within, unseen, unknown, unheralded, and unopposed until the hour grows far too late. One man pierces the veil of magic that blinds us all and marks the world as it truly is, revealing secrets, secrets of Angle Theta, so horrifying as to shatter a man's mind and call into question the very nature of good and evil.
When mad sorcerers open a gateway to the very pits of hell, releasing outre demons of darkest nightmare upon the world, only the intrepid knights of House Eotrus stand in their way. Claradon Eotrus takes up the mantle of his noble house to avenge his father and hold back the tide of chaos that threatens to engulf the world and destroy mankind. Claradon recruits Angle Theta and Gabriel Garn, mysterious knights of mystical power to stand with him. Theta and Garn take up their swords one last time against the coming darkness -- a darkness from which only one will emerge.

3.0 out of 5 stars So The Little People Will Save Us. 11 April 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is not normally my choice of genre although I am pleased that I chose to continue reading it. Mystical/magical creatures are not my favourite things especially when they are elves and alike. However, my personal tastes aside, this was written very well and the author managed to keep the sense of time. place and languge consistant throughout.
I felt that I forgot much about the characters along their journey for example their traits and backgrounds. If I had one wish for this novel, I would wish that we could learn a little more about the main characters and they way they became the way they were. It is only my opinion, but, I think that it couldn't hurt the plot if the characters were used to bulk out the novel. Like I say, it is purely my opinion as it was an utterly new experience to me. Despite my failure to absorb as much information as I would like, it was great to find a section located at the end of the piece that I could refer to should I want to.
I was able to keep track of the plot and understand what was going on. My only niggle/fault was that it all ended rather abruptly which left many unanswered questions for me. I know that it was probably due to a sequel but it felt somewhat rushed compared to the body of the novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read! 13 Jan 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have been meaning to read this book for some time, and when I did, I could not put it down! As someone who has read books like The Hobbit and the Philip Pullman trilogy, and lots of medieval books, I was pleasantly surprised by this fantasy! I think you have to follow through with the rest of the books, to get a real taste of Glen G Thater`s writing, which I intend to do. Adventure, suspense, good versis evil, magic, sorcery, hero`s, mystery. If you like that kind of escapism in a book, then this one is for you. I highly recommend it to adults and older children alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just enough to intrigue the imagination 27 Sep 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A really enjoyable short story, a little confusing in places but as I have now discovered its part of a longer story I understand why, although had I known this at the beginning I probably would have started with the larger book as I now feel I want to race on to the next but may miss something by not rereading the first, if you see what I mean? But overall I feel it's a series I am going to enjoy greatly.
