Amazon.co.uk Review

Are G4 pop, are they opera or are they indeterminately heterogeneous enough to be identified as a new species called popera? Runners-up in the compellingly addictive television talent show X-Factor, this young and classically-trained male vocal quartet were arguably the only act distinctive enough to fulfil the incomparability criterion alluded to in the contest's title. When it came to the judges' evaluation, even the normally forthright and disputatious Simon Cowell found himself floundering between dumbstruck reticence and fence-straddling equivocation. What is clear, however, from G4's debut album is the populist supermarket direction they've been prodded in. In mitigation, perhaps this is understandable. Despite the bravery and accomplishment of applying operatic blossom to REM's "Everybody Hurts" and Radiohead's "Creep"- and let's hear some more of this emotive excellence, please--Trevor Horns' fail-safe production and the steadfastly predictable musical arrangements on the pop numbers enforces the sort of backdrop karaoke conservatism which distracts from G4's more interesting vocal work, which, after all, is this ensemble's very raison d'etre. So, there's no sign of G4's daft rendition of Britney's "Baby One More Time" but "Bohemian Rhapsody" is present in all its pleasantly pompous glory (a whole orchestra stands in for the Brian May guitar solo) while a hearty "Jerusalem" is likely to out belt the Welsh in any international rugger match singing showdown. And for tearful followers of the round ball game? "Nessum Dorma" and "You'll Never Walk Alone". --Kevin Maidment

The Next Best Thing. 12 Oct 2005
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
When G4 first walked into the audition room for the first time on X-Factor 1 in their snappy suits I knew they weren't going to be just another boy band! I was right! G4 are magnificent entertainers and in my mind are the rightful winners of the X-Factor. I'll admit, they had a few weeks where they were weak but no-one can be good 24/7. G4 have brilliant voices and have opened up a whole new genre of Music - "Popera". For the younger generation like me (I'm 19) they've opened up the doors to classical music. Before G4 I never listened to anything classical. Now I have many albums. G4 have survived in the fickly music industry thus far and apeal to a huge audience. Not only that, but they are smart, intelligent likable men who are easy on both the eye and the ear. I bought this album on the day it came out and I was impressed, especially with their version of Bohemian Rhapsody. They have opened up the music of Queen to my generation. I really enjoyed this album, and it proves it was good because it has now gone double-platinum. If England ever decide to adopt Jerusalem for their national anthem then G4's version should be the one. Its sang with beautiful emotion and all the songs on this album show off their voices to there best.

I understand that G4 are not everyones cup of tea, but please listen to them before you slate them. Even my nan was impressed by them - and thats an honour! G4 were completely wasted on street busking. May they win many awards and have a long and successful career. They truly define the world "X-FACTOR!"

A touch of class! 30 Sep 2005
Format:Audio CD
I think that this CD clearly demonstrates who the real winners of the X Factor were. G4 ooze pure talent and fantasic strong voices that send shivers down your spine.

I feel that their first CD shows their great range for excellence in all types of music, each and every song is done extremely well. I play this CD over and over again and my children love listening to it too.

G4 sing with emotion and passion each track, from the wonderful 'creep' to the tearjerking 'to where you are', and I am very much looking forward to hearing more from them and future releases.

These Guys are awe inspiring. I have listened to my first copy so much that I have had to replace it with a brand new one! On the X-Factor they were astounding, on the CD they are brilliant, but watching them in concert is humbling; as their voices are truly fantastic. Why people are complaining about the content is beyond me; as these Guys always said that their first album would be made up of many of the songs that they sang on the X-Factor. And it is a 'Double Platinum' which I think speaks for itself. Also, their recent tour was a complete sell out! So they must be doing something right wouldn't you say?!
