Most solid and reliable back up drive 4 Feb 2010
By PhotoArtist - Published on Amazon.com
I have been using G-technology drives for 3 years now. I am a professional photographer and magazine writer.
Te G-Safe is my main storage unit. THe best part is that everything I store on one drive is automatically duplicated and thus "backed up" on the other.

SInce my first 250GB G-Safe, I have now expanded my photography collection and now have two 2 TB G-safe, and a 1 TB G-Safe. I also have purchased a spare drive of each size so I put the spare in, take one of the duplicated drives out, and take the loaded duplicates to my safety deposit box once every couple of weeks and also when I travel. That way, if something were to happen to my office, all my repository of images is still on a drive in a separate location. Best part: If something did happen and I needed the data and could not get my hands on a comparable G-Safe replacement - NO problem. The drive is a plain drive with no fancy proprietary software required. SO I can simply connect the drive using a USB to SATA cable (I found one for $39) and connect it to another computer to download and duplicate my files. The units are quiet, solid, and safe.
I have since purchased a number of G-Tech's other products and have been very happy. They also have live tech support if needed. I found that out when I wanted to purchase the separate drives.

As close to "Bomb-proof" as you'll find... even at twice the price! 4 Jun 2010

I absolutely LOVE my G-Safe and I'll NEVER live without one again.

I'm an Indie Film guy who does all his own editing. My editing system (3.06GHz MacBook Pro for now) is mission critical, to say the least. My G-Safe has helped lift a HUGE weight of concern off my mind. While I'm working I keep this beast on and backing up hourly through Apple's Time Machine (backup software), but I do turn the G-Safe off when I'm not working.

* I should probably clarify though, I do NOT use this G-Safe for the Video Footage I'm editing. It's not designed as a high-speed drive. It's strictly designed for data protection. I actually edit using a couple of G-Raid FW800's which are also as close to bomb-proof as I've found.

I can also vouch for G-Tech's customer service. They're not "good"... they're not even "great"... they are legitimately AWESOME! Seriously, they really do ROCK! They all know their products inside and out and more importantly, they back them up big time. My hat's off to the whole G-Tech crew (no seriously, I really took my hat off)!

I've had two laptop failures over the past year and although I've got another 500GB backup device on my home network, I needed something with RAID 1 redundancy. This little device(roughly 12.5cm x 10cm x 20cm) fits the bill. Ease of use is outstanding. I pulled it out of the box, connected it to my MacBook through the firewire connection and used it as my TimeMachine storage device. Thus far it has worked like a charm--consistent operation every time I turn it on. The most important thing for me is that disks will fail and this little baby help help me ensure that if one fails the other has a mirrored copy of all my data. Just what I was looking for.
