Product Description

Product Description
Becoming a gentleman takes more than common sense, and frankly it's a lost art nowadays. The loosening-up of good-behaviour norms has not made for a happier society - it has led us down the path towards road-rage and general disrespect. So with revived interest in the principles of courtesy and good manners of the past, to who can the modern man turn to when he'd rather be a gentleman than a lad? "G is for Gentleman" is your answer. Offering lessons in modern manners and style, it is written by a man for men. Packed with such indispensable information as how to be the perfect host, how to decorate your home like a gentleman and when to know if you should kiss her or go home, this handbook is filled with all the advice a regular guy needs to become a man of honour and decorum.

About the Author
Sam Martin is the best-selling author of How to Mow the Lawn and How to Keep House. He lives in Austin, Texas, with his wife and two sons. Sam works full-time as a freelance writer and modern gentleman.

5.0 out of 5 stars Old-fashioned, and all the better for it., 10 Dec 2007
This is a guide to manners, behaviour, wardrobe and a general 'how-to' guide on what makes a gentleman a gentleman.

It's superb. The rules involved may not have dated much from the late eighteenth century, but are none the worse for that. Even today, only the most militant feminist will object to having car doors opened for her, or seeing men stand when she leaves the table, so maybe the human race hasn't changed that much in the past hundred or so years.

The sad fact is, however, that the vast majority of the male occupants of the planet won't read this and won't understand why they should. However, therein lies the golden opportunity for those of us who do understand to steal a march on our less-developed rivals.

Also, a note to those who've arrived here by mistake while looking for pick-up manuals: try using this book as a guide to leaving the frat-boy tactics behind and being a little grown-up. The results may pleasantly surprise you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good, 18 Oct 2008
By Mark Johnson (London) - See all my reviews

On the whole a good book, compact and concise (don't expect a text book) with its only slight failing being that the american author lapses into some horrifically ungentlemanly language from time to time.

High points include manners regarding the use of mobile phones and some good practical advice. Low points are some of the americanisms (a gentleman wearing a baseball cap?) and the very lowest point is the section on cocktails where the author obviously places far more emphasis on personal preference than time-honoured and well refined recipes (for instance implying that the perfect Martini would in fact contain no vermouth!)
