Having said that, after a few listens, it has also become my favorite VNV Nation album. I normally find VNV Nation mild compared to Wumpscut and Ultraviolence, however this album does contain (although it is more synthy) some excellent hardcore trance dance tracks, the epitomy being "Structure" and "Epicenter".
I prefer the vocals on the opening tracks, his voice is a bit harsher than usual, but the music is a bit lighter (in general).
There are several excellent dance tracks (Epicenter, Electronaut, Structure, Fearless) and some excellent slow tracks Holding On, Carbon, Beloved, Airships), the slow tracks being slower than anything VNV Nation have produced yet.
Carbon is my favorite track on this album. Like Beloved, it is about the harm we do to our planet and to nature with technology and our will to power.
This album will make you want to dance (turn it up!!) and if you sing (badly) in your room to it, it can also make you cry! Such is the style of modern EBM: that 1990's and 22nd century child of industrial and synth pop.
We start off with a nice little intro, 'Foreword', before getting straight down to business with the stomping, up-tempo electro of 'Epicentre'. This is followed by the first of four instrumentals, 'Electronaut', and it's the best of the bunch. But no sooner have we've come to the premature conclusion that 'FuturePerfect' is going to be, well, perfect, we're hit in the face with the rather pointless classical-sounding instrumental 'Liebestod', followed up by 'Holding On' which, even though it is dull and ploddingly slow, has some incredibly bitter lyrics. Track 6, 'Carbon' turns out to be yet another plod-by-numbers, and by now we've long ago lost the momentum the album had with its first couple of tracks.
The first single 'Genesis' is pretty good electro, but far from one of VNV's best songs. 'Structure' is the album's third instrumental, this time one that is rather harsh-sounding and up-tempo, but still manages to come across as a filler track rather than a real song.
At long last, we come to track 9, 'Fearless', and it is a belter of a song - I'm amazed that this didn't turn out to be contender for the second single from this album. But, yet again, just as things had started to look up with 'Genesis' and the last song, along comes '4am', a rather pointless 2-minute soundscape. We're into the final stretch now, with second single 'Beloved' and it's... rather bland - yet more VNV by numbers, I'm afraid. The CD closes with the 8-minute 'Airships' and it's a hard one to even try to describe, so I won't bother.
So, overall, a few stomping great numbers ('Epicentre', 'Electronaut' and 'Fearless'), interspersed throughout a rather mediocre album. Hopefully VNV will do much better next time... Oh, and skip the 'Beloved' singles if you haven't already. The remixes of the title track aren't handled very well at all...
So, that's the main bad point out the way. Tracks like Carbon on here are powerful and brooding, and are great either on your CD player or to dance to at a club.
Praise for the Fallen is probably a better example of VNV Nation's work, and it doesn't suffer from neo-classical pieces thown into somwhere they look lost. Like PFTF, though, this album is grandiose, brooding, and emotive - it's pompous, political, and still well worth listening to.
