Amazon.co.uk Review

One spin of FutureSex/LoveSounds and it's hard to believe that Justin Timberlake was ever a boy-band barnstormer--no modern-day male artist beats him when it comes to single-minded self assurance or suavity. "SexyBack," the inescapable summer sizzler of a first single off this short and thrillingly unwholesome disc, makes that clear on its own: If there was ever any question about whether sexy was in need of reviving--a doubtful proposition at best, given the sheer volume of JT's gyrating counterparts--he lays it to rest instantly over a small but insistent Timbaland-concocted beat. On that track, Timberlake's appeal is his sweet but newly thuggish-sounding voice--here's a good kid gone bad, and he's determined to convince us of it not only by tossing a few well-timed mother****ers our way but also with such lyrics as "I'll let you whip me if I misbehave." The rest of FutureSex will feel familiar to anyone who picked up 2002's brilliantly funk-flecked Justified: "Love Stoned/I Think She Knows Me," shifts from Michael Jackson-esque paranoid trilling to pulsating guitar rock; "Chop Me Up," a collaboration with Three 6 Mafia and Timbaland, gives up the grit rap-style but still manages to recall both Prince and Stevie Wonder; "My Love," with T.I., mines classic Timberlake territory with meltaway lyrics like "I can see us holding hands walking on the beach/Our clothes in the sand"; and the straight-up but groovy lament "Losing My Way" asks, searchingly, what may be the silliest question a squeal-inducing pop star has ever posed: "Can anybody out there feel me?" Rest assured, JT: we feel every past-, present-, and future-sexy verse. --Tammy La Gorce

CD Description

'Futuresex/Lovesounds' is the second album release from Justin Timberlake and comes four years after his multi-million selling debut 'Justified'. Produced by the likes of Timbaland, Rick Rubin and Will.I.Am, the album sees Timberlake move away from the slick R&B sound of his debut, opting for a more funk-rock sound citing David Bowie and Prince as key influences. The single 'SexyBack' is also included.

3.0 out of 5 stars poor first impressions, 14 Sep 2006
By K. D. Savage "justified?" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
When JT first released singles from his Justified album, I tried not to like them. He was a boyband escapee trying to be cool...I didn't like that one bit.

I did, however, like his music. It was sexy, cool...it made girls want him, and guys want to be him.

I first stole my sisters copy (ha!) then came out of the closet, and bought my own.

Then came Sexyback...a fresh take, and a seemingly ideal precursor to a follow up album.

I bought this new album the day of its release. I went straight for Sexyback...always nice to start with a favourite..it builds the anticipation for the rest of the album.

What a dissapointment.

Dont get me wrong, it could be that in isolation, this is a great album. Every track could be a masterpiece in its own right. However, I was hoping to a justified follow up, and thats what the signs pointed to. What has appeared is a slow, mellow attempt at a more 'grown up' album, and I dont like it.

I've given it 3 stars..I dont like it, but I'm hoping it'll be a grower, and it deserves one added for sexyback.

It depends what you;re looking for. Personally, I think if you really do have to give this guy more of your money, buy a second copy of Justified and keep it in the car.

5.0 out of 5 stars [] Future Sex / Love Sounds, 21 Oct 2006
By Gareth Brooke (Leeds, UK) - See all my reviews
I am a BIG fan of Mr. JT and this album surely shows why!

The album starts where 'Justified' left off! My favourite tracks below...

My Love - (10/10) Absolutely love this track its so simple yet so catchy and doesn't get boring. T.I. is also good in the song and his rap goes with the rythym and flow of the song. With obvious production by Timbaland (this guy's a legend) you can't really go wrong.

What Goe's Around (Comes Around) (10/10) Again I absolutely love this song because the lyrics are great and so is the beat. Only hitch with this song is the references of which many believe to be aimed at Britney Spears; we heard all that business on 'Justified' so leave it there Justin!

Chop Me Up (9/10) Nice to see JT going a bit more 'urban'. This is a fresh track and I like it. Three 6 Mafia are good in the song too but Timbaland... as much as I like him; that's only as a producer as his raps ain't that good and I'm sick of hearing him use the same lyric 'AKA Thomas Crown'. Otherwise, good song!

Losing My Way (9/10) Excellant song and nice to see JT talking about serius matters other than Britney Spears. The song is again simple but in no way boring. Love the lyrics. Love the beats. Love the song.

They are my favourite songs on the album but that doesn't mean I think all the other songs are rubbish and they are no way seen as filler's. It's just I think the tracks above are the stand out tracks on the album and I hope to see them released as singles.

Overall... love this album and bring on Mr. JT's 3rd!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dynamic, different and oozes style..., 2 Sep 2006
What can I say, ever since N*Sync dropped celebrity, people actually took notice and recognised them for having style and all in all good voices and charisma. of course, as all boy bands are destined to do, they split up spawning one successful solo career and lets be fair, it was always gonna be JT.
After justified, his status as an up and coming rnb singer were cemented but he didnt really offer anything new. The beats were then overplayed and over produced, ie the neptunes beats. and the album came out on a downward fall for rnb as a whole. now as the years have gone on, justin has come back with this daring yet dynamic second album.
Im gonna be honest, when i first heard sexy back, i wasnt impressed but the song has grown on me massively. As his first album came produced by the neptunes who were on the slide themselves, this second album comes produced by timberland, whose career has took a massive resurgent leap onwards and upwards. As a result, what we have is not a regurgitated okayish album but a fantastically different album with the style of the tracks taking a sharp turn away from the tedious neptunes beats of the early naughties. Instead, we have a fusion of dance, rnb and hip hop creating a refreshing sound and somewhat daring turn for the ever popular timberlake.
Now it would have been easy for him to just put out another justified and called it something different as we all know it would of sold like mums fairy cakes at the school bake sale. But he hasnt, and for that, i think we have to hand immense kudos out to the ex nsync front man.
On first listen, like sexy back, what you get is not what you expect. whether thats a good thing i leave that decision up to you. but if you want a new perception of modern rnb or enjoy dance fusion then it certainly should be a good thing. Personally, I think it is an exceptionally good album, the beats from timberland are back to his best but sound distinctively different. Of course they still contain the trademark beat boxes and side raps but the essence of the tracks offer something else to his previous work. Naturally, the michael jackson comparisons will emerge, particularly when you hear Lovestoned/i think she knows, and yes you can certainly sense the king of pop was a massive influence but this album definately puts timberlake out on his own and certainly stakes his claim as a genuine artist rather than a publicised front man. Tracks like my love are the perfect example of the fresh approach he has taken, an excellent appearence by man of the moment TI and a dance hook running throughout illustrates the artistic freedom he has clearly been given.
Although the lyrics are a little simple at times, you find yourself too busy nodding your head to even notice. With a heavy array of strings rather than cheesy electro keyboards makes the music more than just a backing track to a singer.
The fans might not like it, the purists might not either, but the still smitten girls will like whatever the guy puts out. but people who fancy listening to something different and appreciate good beats should like this latest effort from Timberlake. It will have its skeptics and critics but I really like it.
For a final word, along with Nelly Furtado, Justin Timberlake has certainly hitched a ride on the Timberland train at the perfect time. His music is fresh and dynamic and on a very steep climb to worldwide success the neptunes had a few years back. Rather than jump on board when things were heading south (like he did with his first album) justin has certainly got up early to get on this convoy!!! A fully accomplished piece of work when in all fairness he knew full well he didnt have to make the effort as his popularity is still up there and his record would have still sold.
