Product Description

Product Description

In Future Grace, author John Piper helps readers discover the key to overcoming sin and living a life that honors God. Many men and women attempt to walk upright out of gratitude for what Christ did in the past, but Piper encourages believers to look ahead to the grace God provides for us on a day-by-day, moment-by-moment basis—putting faith into action by laying hold of God’s promises for the challenges we face.

Sever the Root of Sin

No one sins out of duty. We sin because we want to. Sin promises happiness, and we buy the lie. So how can the root of sin be severed in our lives? The penalty of sin must be paid by the righteous blood of Christ. And the power of sin must be broken by banking on the promises of Christ.

John Piper’s meditations are rooted in rock-solid biblical reflection. Chapter by chapter—one for each day of the month—he reveals how, by cherishing the promises of God, you can break the power of anxiety, despondency, covetousness, lust, bitterness, impatience, pride, misplaced shame, and more.

From the Publisher

The pursuit of pleasure is not optional - it is essential. It
is our business to glorify God by enjoying him for ever. Piper shows how
God-centred joy, fuelled by worship, prayer and the Bible, overflows in
service and mission. (Updated edition) --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

"This is a rich and wise book, one to treasure and re-read." So says J.I. Packer and I couldn't agree more.

The big idea that Piper teaches in this book is that it is only by God's daily grace to us that we will make it from now through the rest of today and the rest of our lives and into His kingdom. Piper teaches powerfully from the bible that God has promised to give us this grace and that nothing will stop Him from keeping His promise. As we trust Him to keep that promise, faith severs the root of our sinful actions and attitudes.

What really marks this book out is that every 2 or 3 chapters of teaching about God's future grace are separated by a chapter on "applying the purifying power". These chapters deal with how to fight against sinful attitudes through faith in God's future grace. What gripped me was that many of these are the very sins that I fight daily and yet had never come across any kind of structured bible teaching on how to fight them. So Piper covers anxiety, pride, lust, bitterness, despondency and others.

There are very few Christian books that I have found so useful that I have wanted to repeatedly go back to them. This is one of those books.

Worthwhile Read 3 July 2011

This book as mentioned in another review can be a very difficult read in places. Although it is very very worthwhile the understandiung that all sin is unbelief, is a very biblical and fundamental principle. It gives credence to our attempts to root out idolatry, and to live the first commandment. I was very much encouraged by this book and it does not give "new" revelations but expounds upon the word of God. I thought it was brilliant there were parts I found more difficult to read than others as I said, but that does not rob it of it's value.
