Amazon.co.uk Review

The third of a series of four planned Futurama spin-off TV movies, Bender’s Game follows Bender’s Big Score and Beast With A Billion Backs, and comfortably sits alongside them. It’s good, and it’s sometimes very funny, but is unlikely still to be regarded as vintage Futurama.

The plot of Bender’s Game takes the regulars on a mission that soon sees them in a strange land, which bears a striking resemblance to something out of Dungeons and Dragons or Lord of the Rings. This isn’t, as you’d expect, the safest place to be, and thus the scene is set for lots of genre gags that are, at their finest, hard to resist.

On the downside, the pacing is a little off this time round, and it takes Bender’s Game some time to hit its stride. The quest part of the movie doesn’t kick into until well over half the running time is up, and while there’s real ambition in the narrative, it does demand some patience.

But still, even if this isn’t top notch Futurama, it still packs in plenty of belly laughs, and squeezes more entertainment into 84 minutes than many movies get close to in two hours. You still yearn for the tightness of the TV show format, but the quality of the writing just about drags Bender’s Game through, leaving us thirsting for the fourth, and potentially final, movie. --Jon Foster

I liked it. 17 Nov 2008

I can't really understand all the negative reviews here: you can almost hear the comic book guy from the Simpsons declaring it "worst. episode. ever".

The first Futurama movie didn't quite work for me. Entertaining, but it seemed like the writers were struggling to fill the feature length, and chose to fill it with so-so material which would have been cut on an ordinary show (eg. the early "Fox executives themselves fired" joke dragged on far too long).

The second was much better, particularly the first half (the Steamboat Willie spoof, the Deathball scenes, Disco boogie).

The third one may be slightly less entertaining than the second, but still has more laughs than you'll get from just about any show still on TV!

So, ignore the naysayers. Buy it and make your own mind up.

After reading the mixed reviews on here, I wasn't expecting all that much from this latest Futurama movie (why is it that we're always more liable to believe the bad reviews than the good?!). I enjoyed Bender's Big Score but was mildly disappointed by The Beast with a Billion Backs...so was a little concerned that this would be another disappointment. How wrong I was! People can moan all they like, but the bottom line is that this is definitely the most entertaining and FUNNIEST Futurama film yet. I laughed more at this than the first two put together. It's a gag a minute with some delicious parodies of Lord of the Rings and Dungeons and Dragons-type fantasy worlds. This one has definite potential for re-watching and, unlike the Beast with a Billion Backs, I look forward to watching it again and again. Lots of hilarity, particularly from our friend Zoidberg and Mom, who is one of my favourite Futurama characters! Loved it!!

This is the third straight to dvd Futurama film and after the somewhat disappointing 'The Beast With A Billion Backs' it has alot of work to do - would it be third time lucky? Yes, yes it was. The usual excellence in voice acting and animation is here but this film has a key ingredient that was lax in the preceding films - humor. It may not be the cleverest Futurama has ever done but gosh darn it it will make you laugh. It also does not suffer from pacing issues anywhere near as much as the first two films. Overall it's a big step up from The Beast With A Billion Backs' and in terms of comedy if not so much story it surpasses Bender's Big Score (the 1st film) too. I give the film itself 8/10. The technical quality (clarity/sharpness of sound, picture quality) is all above board and warrants a 9/10. The only disappointment is with the special features. What's here is off less quality and crucially of less quantity than in the previous dvd's. It's good don't get me wrong but it could have been much better. As an example I'll use the audio commentary. It has it's moments of funniness but rarely does it stay on topic or tell you anything about the film itself bar small trivial details. There are also about five or six different people which means there is no continuity to the conversation nor do some of the participants get a chance to participate. Overall the special features are worth a 6/10. In conclusion this is an excellent Futurama film on the whole, one that fans are certainly sure to enjoy and at this price good value too but lumbered with a lackluster special features package.

Funny, but it's missing something...
I thought that the whole movie would take place in a fantasy world, but sadly, only about ~30-45 minutes of the movie takes place there. Read more

The worst of the specials
Fails to match the quality of the TV series. The jokes are laboured and sometimes embarrassingly weak.
