Singer-songwriters are meant to trade in whimsical pleasures, in the soft strums of a guitar, in worlds so delicate and small they could shatter at a single touch. Martha Wainwright doesn't trade alongside them. Back with a second record that's both tender and tough, beautiful and brutal, and simmering with invention and confidence, Martha forgot to read the rulebook. Either that, or ... 5.0 out of 5 stars Martha sings Piaf 23 Feb 2010
Format:Audio CD
This is a brilliant album. Martha Wainwright manages to sound like Edith Piaf, but the production and sound quality make this even better than the original Piaf. Martha also chooses the songs that suit her voice best and that have not dated. Her French is impeccable and I highly recommend this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars C'est fantastique! 12 Aug 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I enjoy listening to singer-songwriters lyrics, so a tribute album of covers sung entirely in French (which I can barely string together a sentence in) was not a particularly attractive to me!

I loved Martha Wainwright's first two albums, so with some trepidation I gave Sans Fusils, Ni Souliers, A Paris a Spotify audition. On the first listen one or two tracks stood out (L'Accordéoniste and Le Brun et le Blond), I then listened to it twice more paying it full attention. It then jumped into my Amazon basket (damn those pesky jumping CDs).

The thing is that Martha Wainwight's renditions are full of passion and she's obviously thoroughly enjoying singing every single song. This enthusiasm is utterly infectious and the language barrier becomes irrelevant!

A well deserved place in my CD collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars Shoot The Guitar Player ! 13 Nov 2009
Format:Audio CD
Rufus does Garland : Martha does Piaf.
Seems like there might be a bit of a
symmetrical sibling pattern emerging.

Tit for tat even ?!

Listen up you two....if there is any rivalry
(unconscious or otherwise) going on here
then forget it. You're both marvelous!

Following hard on the heels of her brother's live
Milwaukee album comes 'Sans Fusils, Ni Souliers, A Paris',
Ms Wainwright's live New York tribute to the songs
of Edith Piaf.
I emphasise "tribute'' as her performance in no way attempts
to emulate the voice but rather to capture the energy and
the visceral passion of her muse.

In the main the recording is a triumph.

There is one dark shadow, however, hovering over the project.
It is the guitar playing of musical director Doug Wieselman.

Things start marvelously well with 'La Foule'.
Ms Wainwright's incandescent presence and the superb ensemble
playing breathe wonderful new life into this great song.

'Adieu Mon Coeur' and 'Une Enfant' are, likewise, given vivid,
dramatic and convincing performances by all concerned.

With 'L'Accordeoniste' things begin to go rapidly downhill.
Wieselman's guitar casts a discordant, cacophonous veil over
an iconic composition. It is an unforgivable racket.

'C'Est Toujours La Meme Histoire' is given a truly magical
vocal treatment but once again the ugly guitar interventions
threaten to overwhelm an otherwise remarkable performance.

Garth Hudson's accordion interlude 'Hudsonia' is a hoot!

Thank goodness too for pianist Thomas Bartlett, a sensitive
and erudite accompanist who understands the spirit and
essence of this beguiling music.

5.0 out of 5 stars I LOVE this album 24 May 2010
By Ruth
Format:Audio CD
I've got a very soft spot for the Wainwright family. And for the McGarrigles too.

I came to this record without knowing any Edith Piaf, so I have only listened to it as a Martha Wainwright recording, and I absolutely love it. Martha has a beautiful and very distinctive voice. What a talent she is. I've played it and played it. I highly recommend it, especially if, like me, you're a singer.

4.0 out of 5 stars popular music cd 20 April 2010
Format:Audio CD
If you love Piaf ... you'll still prefer Piaf. However this recording from Martha Wainwright shows some of the versatility inheresnt in her family. She presents a presonal vision of songs she obviously adores - in a Montreal, Quebequoise accent. Overall a delightful album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Martha sings Edith 31 Dec 2009
Format:Audio CD
Took a few listens to tune into all the tracks properly, but a very enjoyable album. Good that MW did not try to copy Piaf's treatments or voice, she brings a refreshing feeling for the songs.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of best 7 Jan 2010
Format:Audio CD
She's one of the best singers ever. And this live album is one of the best I've ever heard. Her thrilling delivery of these wonderful songs, the brilliant arrangements played by an amazingly talented group of musicians - a mini-orchestra, really, the energy and vibe of a live performance: it all adds up to a classic of this kind. The woman is a genius musician just waiting for her time to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Martha Does Edith Proud 12 Nov 2009
Format:MP3 Download
I downloaded this on Monday in preparation for last night's exhilarating concert at the Barbican, and even on the thin speakers on my PC, from the very first track it was abundantly clear this entire project was a triumph. Wainwright inhabits each song completely, without ever descending into pastiche. She obviously has a heartfelt affinity with the songs of the period, and yet is also able to draw on modern influences at times. Everything about this album is beautifully judged and will no doubt have a completely new generation taking Piaf's songs to heart. I cannot wait to see/hear what Martha will do next. Buy Sans Fusils, Ni Souliers, and I promise, you won't regret a thing.

This CD has too many duds on it. Her show had the most brilliant songs and yet she chose some of the most uncommercial pieces. Not good.
