Anya Bast is a fave, and in this tale, she's certainly on form.
Merrick is the Alpha of his clan of wolves, and Nikki, a cougar, has just been named as female Alpha, an 'honour' she does not want. She does not feel as if she fits in, or that she'll be accepted. More so, she does not know if she wants a permanent mating with Merrick, though she does know that she wants him.
So, there we have the tale set for several scenes of some seriously hot sex - some voyeuristic, all the kind of hot and steamy stuff this author delivers. I wasn't disappointed in the tale, as it had a bit of danger, a bit of a reluctant female who needed to be seduced, and boy was she, and it had a HEA, but...it was kind of all about the sex and not so much about love. Yes, I get that with shifters it's all about the mating first, but I don't recall the words ever being uttered, but then perhaps actions speak louder than words?
Overall, good, a lot hotter than Tranquility, the next in the series, which I actually read first. This could also have easily worked as a full-length tale, and probably would have been worth 5* with a little more depth, an explanation of the clan dynamics and more of a love story.
