Even if you have no interest in Wilhelm Reich this is one of the most compelling books ever written about a human being. There is a deep tragedy throughout Reichs life, battling experimental results which point to extraordinary conclusions, fierce personal relationships which dissolve the usual barrier between private and professional. After reading this book you will be astonished that he is not better known. I cannot reccommended this book highly enough.

Sharaf was a pupil/patient of Reichs and has first hand knowledge of the subject. He writes with sympathy but always uses a perceptive and critical intelligence.
If even one tenth of Reichs ideas are correct he is essential to our future - this is one of the best two books on Reichs life ...(the other is David Boadella`s). Read this if you know something about Reich and also if you dont !

The First Reich 15 Jun 2010
By Dr. Delvis Memphistopheles TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
Biography of a deeply controversial man who transformed the perception of sex. He dragged it from the mire of religious self disgust into the forefront of self liberation. Delivering it from the of Victoriana constriction to a release in the latter part of the 20thC. Reich was the bridgehead along with Kinsey for the rediscovery of the body in the west.

A huge cultural impact on the 20thC, influenced initially by Marx, Freud and Nietzsche he developd the field of emotions shaping the body in Character Analysis. He made the links to the psychological dynamics of cancer through his work on blood. Eventually he believed he had discovered the origins of life with his bion experiments. He finally unveiled the orgone accumulator to the world and was duly intellectually trashed. Pursued by the FDA until he went to prison.

In between he managed to alienate all backward structured thinking; communist, fascist, nazi and capitalist with his programme of sexual revolution.

A flawed intense dichotomous mind, persecuted for his message of liberation, vilified, castigated, defiled his books burnt in the USA echoing the trauma of the Nazi spectacle. He spent his last years increasingly socially isolated and paranoid for good reason. They were out to get him

This book is carefully constructed warts and hagiography to be recommended reading alongside Reich's texts to gain the key insights. Reich emerged from a family of trauma. His father was an authoritarian bully whilst his mother sought to escape into the climax of her lover. Reich witnessed it all including the slow torturous death of his mother as she committed suicide after being discovered. Trauma was the basis of Reich's self discoveries.

Traversing Nazism, eventually succumbing to his hubris he fell from grace due to his lack of identification of maelevolence. Ironic because it is detailed succinctly in Oh Little Man. Reich failed to heed his own inner man.

In this seminal work he poured vitriol on the red menace as much as the black shirted virulence. Sharaf traces the formation of his thoughts in this entertaining biography. Incidentally he had a sexual relationship with Sharaf's partner confirmed by the author. However he still found it within himself to steer clear of revenge. Such is the power of the 1st Reich.

Reich was a flawed genius who speaks beyond the decades to the present, a colussus with feet of clay. These were the giants of the 20thC, the heroes, those who stood apart from the herd and forged their own worlds through intellectual power. Now we have tumbled into their vortex, such is the power of their imaginations.
