Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
Five discs of music and a German language interview disc. Everything live except the studio Mozart (No.39), I think.

The discography includes bucket loads of Beethoven, so it makes for a change to have comparatively little here. Overtures: Egmont, a heavy Leonore II (EMI's Vienna version is more vibrant), a good performance of Symphony No.8 - never Furtwangler's favourite piece, but no matter - and a superb Grosse Fuge (but again, not as good as the Salzburg broadcast on Orfeo).

Good to hear more of the maestro's weighty Bach (Suite No.3), nowadays frowned upon by self-appointed guardians of propriety, as well Gluck (Alceste). There's also another discographical rarity: Schumann's Spring Symphony, given a strong but fizzing interpretation that never becomes too strident.

The meat of this box set is as follows:

Strauss' Metamorphosen, in a trenchant and grieving performance from 1947. The best version of this intense study for string orchestra.

Brahms' First & Third Symphonies: my favourite Furtwangler versions, though the da capo from No.3 is cut. 'At last I think I have understood this work' (No.3, paraphrased from booklet). There's an astounding Brahms live set available from EMI, but it's well worth having these further broadcasts.

Bruckner's Ninth: Berlin (1944). Furtwangler's, indeed the world's, greatest Bruckner Ninth. One of a kind.

There are other more substantial sets, but DG provide the best remastering and one shouldn't be without the Strauss or Bruckner items, which are one-offs and worth the price of admission.

The remastering are the same as the previous DGG remastering.
There is no improvment in the sonic quality.
But the slim pack presentation is fine, with good liner notes.
There is no translation of the Furtwangler interviews from cd 6.
But for a first Furtwangler set, it is a good buy.
For a specialist, nothing is new.
5 stars for Furtwangler
