Product Description

Kate Duncan agrees to help her young cousin land a husband though she draws the line when she learns the foolish girl wants to use an apothecary's love potion to snag the notorious Marcus Pelham! To prove the elixir a fake, Kate drinks it herself-and experiences the most erotic moment of her life when she stumbles upon Marcus in a most compromising position. Every nerve in Kate's body sings as she watches from the shadows, but is her response a result of the potion...or the man? Luckily, Marcus is far too busy to notice Kate's spying-or so she thinks...
As the Earl of Stamford, Marcus has his choice of willing ladies to share his bed. Yet nothing has ever aroused him as much as the image of Kate watching him. Marcus tries to have a little fun with Kate by drinking the elixir-and then appearing to lose all control every time she's near. But the prank goes awry when Marcus finds himself wildly and truly attracted to the innocent Kate. As he teaches her the passionate art of seduction, will he lose his heart for the very first time?

Cheryl Holt spins her now known tale of an experienced man luring an innocent into exploring sensual pleasures, an exploration that ensnares them in a scorching affair. The tale is still lushly and erotically told. In this novel Marcus, jaded and bored with life, happens upon Kate, mired in despair but an innocent nonetheless. Their scorching affair provides escapism for both and the sensual play soon evolves to love. Life eventually intrudes on their interlude and Marcus reacts typically spoilt and with the ignorance that Ms Holt sometimes sketches her male characters of noble birth. Kate bares the brunt of the disastrous consequences of their dalliance. Marcus eventually sees the light, repents his earlier callous behaviour and expresses his regret in both word and action to Kate before they find that love does indeed conquer all. The sincere expression of regret for callous behaviour and a heartfelt wish to right the situation is a first in a Holt-novel as far as this reader is concerned. Usually it is glossed over or assumed to have been addressed. This alone sets this novel apart in a positive sense from other Holt-novels

This was a library pick for me for a light holiday read. Well it was so appallingly written that after the first few pages I could barely bring myself to skim read it. The characters were all equally unlikeable. The plot - unlikely rubbish. The best and most laughable line for me was the heroine saying to the hero "you're so full of it"!!! Americanisms, bad English, anachronistic language for the period - it's all there with knobs on. In one word: Awful.

Despite being highborn, Kate Duncan has been practically forced to serve her aunt and spoiled cousin since she became an orphan when she was a child. While visiting London for the first time, her young charge is determined to win the delicious but notorious Marcus Pelham, Earl of Stamford and the way she intends to force his hand is by having him drink a love potion.

Determined not to let Marcus fall into her cousin's trap, Kate drinks the potion herself and finds herself stumbling upon Marcus in the middle of a very erotic tryst. Luckily Marcus is too busy to notice her watching... or so she thinks.

Marcus is titillated by the lady watching from the shadows and subsequently smitten by the passionate woman he discovers when he seeks her out. But despite their increasingly sensual encounters, there are secrets and plots about that may just keep the pair from discovering a most unexpected love.

This was another enjoyable story from Cheryl Holt and sticks to her tried and tested plot of the innocent miss, a very delicious alpha male and some uninhibited and deliciously erotic sex scenes.

The story itself does everything right - the main characters are worthy to be cheered on, the villains are devious enough to hate and get their comeuppance in the end and we have an engaging story on the way to a satisfyingly happy ending. As seems to be a regular occurrence for Cheryl Holt's novels, this one is littered with an exasperating amount of Americanisms and modern language. While annoying, you do learn to ignore it as the story unfolds. If you're looking for a delightfully erotic, fantasy historical romance to keep you occupied for a few hours then you should be pretty happy if you choose this particular book. 4 stars.
