Book Description

16 May 2007

''She lists like Hornby. She talks dirty like Amis. She has the misanthropy of Larkin and examines the finer points of sexual technique as she is adjusting the torque on a beloved but temperamental old E-type...It's hard to believe that this clever and candid new voice has no more to say. Whoever the author is, she should give up the day job. Only then will we find out what the real Belle de Jour is made of.' Independent

This follow-up to the hugely successful 'Intimate Adventures' will be just as bold, funny and brilliant. Peppered with agony-aunt letters and advice, and stories from her 'working' life, it's also the story of a young woman making her way in the world - told in Belle's inimitable voice.

Review

'The long awaited follow up to The Intimate Adventures of a London Call Girl charts the notorious Belle in the world of high-class vice. She's trying hard to land a respectable job, but can't resist seeing clients in her lunch hour. She's still at it, still doesn't care what people think and it's still utterly addictive.' (COMPANY (October 2006) **** )

'Full of agony aunt letters and advice from her days as a call girl, Belle de Jour's diary is bold and funny. It's a book full of insightful observations written by a woman working hard to find her place in the world.' (WATERSTONES BOOKS QUARTERLY )

'full of frank humour and even more frank action.' (DAILY MIRROR (22.9.06) )

'Her writing [is] full of refreshing comedy and eye-watering advice...Belle's candid humour is compulsive.' (Katy Guest THE INDEPENDENT (22.9.06) )

'Whether she's describing peculiar fetishes or handing out agony aunt style advice, it's Belle's witty, stylish writing, rather than her salacious subject matter, that really stands out. Although more Bridget Jones in a brothel than Catherine Deneuve in Chanel, this tongue-in-cheek delight will nonetheless leave a smile on your face.' (Jo Hoare HEAT (30.9 - 6.10 2006) ***** ) --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible! 27 Dec 2006
By Megan C
Format:Hardcover
What a let down! I loved Belle's first book. This one, was simply awful. I kept forcing myself to turn each page, hoping desperately that the story would pick up, that it would get interesting. It didn't. This book is boring and self indulgent. Belle talks for 322 pages and somehow manages to say nothing at all. I had hoped that when I got to the conclusion, I would discover why Belle thought her ramblings important enough to be published. There is no conclusion, she simply stops talking. I feel angry and cheated.

1.0 out of 5 stars Bitterly Disappointing 5 Oct 2007
Format:Paperback
I wish I had read the other reviews before I bought this book but I had enjoyed the first one so much it never occurred to me that the second would be anything but briliant. How wrong I was. The Belle of the first book was a strong confident admirable woman that I bet a lot of women secretly wish to be, call girl career and all. I loved her open minded attitude to people and found her a thoroughly likeable peron.

SO!! what happened in the second book? Well her first mistake was giving up "the business". Turning herself into a normal girl was the worst thing Belle could do because with that came the boring dull life and a personality to match. It is hard to believe that this is the same girl. She has turned into a pathetic sap, letting 'the Boy' treated her like garbage and making excuses for his childish bevahiour. Please!! I can get that kind if drivel from the stupid girls at work.
My advice... Get your sexy knickers back on and go back to doing what you are best at. There's no shame in that.

If you enjoyed the first book then save yourself the hassle with the second. Gone is the sassy confident call girl Belle. Obviously a certain amount of it had to be a veneer but ALL of it?

Instead she is replaced by a normal girl. Ordinarily this would be fine except she has been replaced by THAT girl. The one you have to hate.

Whining about a cheating boyfriend but never bothering to do anything about it, bitching about other girls behaviour as if her own is exemplary and acting like a 12 year old over her parents divorce...

It's like she has become a nasty version of Becky from the Shopaholic series... the difference being that Sophie Kinsella is well aware her heroine is a bit of a joke.

I spent the whole book skim reading and wishing Belle would put back on her working knickers as that's obviously where her backbone is. *pout* I just really hope it was a bad year as I'm pretty sure she deserves better and am damn sure she can write to a higher standard.
