Product Description

"Out of the Furnace, the movie, is featuring a score soundtrack by the British composer Dickon Hinchliffe. During his career as musician and composer Hinchliffe has been scoring successful films such as Forty Shades of Blue (winner of the Grand Jury prize at the Sundance Film Festival in 2005), Keeping Mum (starring Rowan Atkinson and Patrick Swayze), Golden Globe winning Last Chance Harvey and Winter’s Bone (winner of the Grand Jury prize at the Sundance Film Festival in 2010). Furthermore some of his compositions have featured in television series including The Sopranos, The Brotherhood and The Shins and the feature films Intimacy, Sleeping with the Fishes and most recently Medicine for Melancholy. Dickon Hinchliffe also is a founding member of Tindersticks – the seminal UK band for which he composed music, played violin, guitar and keyboards. "

Last month I saw "Out of the Furnace" in the theatre here in Cincinnati and I made a mental note to myself to check out the soundtrack, as I thought it sounded quite nice.

"Out of the Furnace: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" (17 tracks; 36 min.; and no, that is not a typo) brings the original score of the movie, composed by British composer Dickon Hinchliffe, best known for his soundtrack of "Winter's Bone", the amazing movie debut of Jennifer Lawrence a few years back. This soundtrack is a collection of short instrumental tunes, some mere snippets really, most tracks are in the 1 to 2 min. range. The score opens with a short, rustic and somber sounding "Barely Hanging On", and that title alone will give you some idea of what the music sounds like. "Love You Bud" brings a similarly restrained sound, with some guitar noodling upfront. "Liquid Dinner" is so restrained it's barely audible at times. "Rodney & The Jackson Whites" is a beautiful orchestral piece, yet here also the undercurrent is somber. As is often the case with these soundtracks, the titles of individual tracks almost give away the plot ("Fixing Fights", "Rodney Prepares For Fight", etc.) The soundtrack closes with the title track, which in barely 2 minutes summarizes the overall sound of this quite nicely. It's hard to pinpoint "highlights" as such, in that this soundtrack truly plays like a mostly downbeat mood piece, and if you happen to be in the mood for this particular music vibe, this will play great.

Bottom line: I really enjoyed this movie score, perhaps just because it is rather somber and intimate, if not restrained. But at a mere 36 min., it's a shame that this is selling at a full price, as this may keep away some people from buying this.

I love Dickon Hinchcliffe and this is really good, haven't seen the film yet though, and I expect the music is better.

Beautiful, if somber, soundtrack matched up perfectly with gritty movie 12 Dec. 2013

But at a mere 36 min., it's a shame that this is selling at a full price, as this may keep away some people from buying this. Also, be aware that this contain ONLY the instrumental score, not the other incidental songs that appear in the movie. Hence, Pearl Jam's "Release", which plays over the closing credits of the movie, is NOT on here.

As to the movie, "Out of the Furnace" is a heavy and gritty movie, dealing with/exposing an ugly underbelly of society. This is not the kind of movie that you walk out of thinking "well, that was a jolly good time!", but I nevertheless enjoyed it pretty much from start to finish. And the acting performances will blow you away, in particular the three main characters, as played by Christian Bale, Woody Harrelson and Casey Affleck. Both "Out of the Furnace" the movie and the soundtrack are well worth checking out!
