Book Description

11 Oct 2012

In 2001 Will Young shot to fame as the first winner of Pop Idol. It was clear from the start that he would never be a typical pop star - and more than ten years later he has become one of our best-loved and most intriguing artists.

From his dramatic experiences on Pop Idol; to coming out in the glare of the media spotlight; to his valiant struggles against depression; to the crazy reality of being famous, Will is open about both the highs and lows of his life. He also provides sound and practical advice on dealing with the DVLA helpline - something that has been woefully neglected by all other celebrity memoirs.

If you have ever wondered what it's like to attend a fashion show (and find yourself accidentally waving at Anna Wintour); how it feels to sing in front of thousands while fighting a catastrophic bout of low self-esteem; or be subjected to the terror that is a This Morning 'makeover', then Funny Peculiar reveals all. It also reveals what not to say if you ever meet David Beckham.

Moving, witty and scrupulously honest, Funny Peculiar is a refreshingly different and fascinating autobiography by a true original.

Product Description

Review

Hilarious and wonderfully self-deprecating . . . beautifully eloquent (Gay Times)

As well as juicy stories . . . and behind-the-scenes gossip from Pop Idol days, Will is completely candid about the depression that's had him in its grip . . . as well as delving deeper the book manages to keep its levity through funny stories and sweet illustrations (Attitude)

Entertaining . . . Will Young is a man of many parts . . . and now he can say with some pride that he is an amusing writer, too (Books Of The Year Sunday Telegraph)

5.0 out of 5 stars More funny than peculiar 8 Nov 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a book that made me laugh out loud - but there were paragraphs that made me very sad inside. Perhaps I didn't cry, but being around the same age as Will Young's mother - (well maybe a couple of years older) - if nothing else, it made me want to put my arms around him and give him a hug.

Depression must be a devilish curse. Such a talented young man inhabiting a culture almost designed to destroy your self esteem. I believe Will Young is a survivor, and understanding his own problem does, I hope, make it easier to tackle.

I would like to think that he is proud of his book, proud of what he has achieved so far, and is convinced of his own innate skills. Well done YOU

4.0 out of 5 stars Honest and funny.. a fabulous read. 20 Oct 2012

Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Will writes honestly about his life and career, giving an interesting insite into Pop Idol and behind it's doors. The way he openly talks about depression and his feelings is a refreshing and somewhat warming account especially for someone like me who sometimes shares similar emotions. Will stands so prominently as a 'gay' role model that made me and I'm sure many others of our generation feel comfortable with ourselves and our sexuality. It is sometimes difficult to associate with 'celebrity' autobiographies, but Will Young writes with such warmth and humour that you can't help but love his character and work. The reason why he won the love nation during Pop Idol and why he continues his popularity and success today. 5** (It will only let me add 4 stars)

If like me you've loved him from day one you'll obviously love this book but even if your just intrigued by will I highly recommend it you'll get a real sense of who William Robert young is.

3.0 out of 5 stars Bit depressing
Will Young tells the story where he, quite rightly, objected to being introduced by reference to being a singer who suffers with depression. That condition is only part of him. Read more
