Reviews

Featuring a regular cast that includes Jimmy Jewel, David Schofield, Sharon Duce, Jean Boht, Pamela Stephenson and Lynda Bellingham, Funny Man charts the mixed fortunes of an extended family of music-hall entertainers in search of their big break and was based on the experience of Jewel's father's company of players in the 1920s and '30s. The late 1920s is not the best time to be in the business of traditional variety entertainment, as audiences flock to the new cinemas opening in every town. But it is amid these inauspicious circumstances that the Gibsons comedian Alec and his children Davey, Teddy and Kath, and an assortment of charismatic performers make the move south from their native North East to try to break onto the London circuit. Encountering family tragedy, indifferent audiences and a constant shortage of funds, it's just as well that Alec Gibson is a tireless perfectionist, and a man who rarely accepts defeat...

This strange program from ITV lasted just one series, and is difficult to pin a genre on as it had a number of writers and directors- the feel of the program was somewhat liquid. I am not sure the producer and the star (who devised the show) had the same concept of how to play this. The script editor has no credits after this show. I would tentatively describe it as a costume drama, set in the 1930's, and covers the difficulties of the variety circuit. The drama was inspired by the life of Jimmy Jewel's father.

The picture quality on the dvd is fine but the camera work and lighting are odd, with quite reasonable lighting for the principal characters but minor characters almost deliberately unlit or hidden in shadow or behind other characters. Many frames are full of significant movement giving a blurred feel.

This is Jimmy Jewel's show, and is a serious one- not a comedy, there is too much tension and raised tempers. There are 13 episodes - the complete series - on four DVDs with no extras. There are "moderate sex references" but the 12 cert is more for violence.

The original price of over thirty pounds is probably too much for this show but if you can find it at a bargain price it may be worth a look, but a classic must-see show it isn't.

Quite a good drama, no big laughs but a compelling story. Jimmy Jewell was the reason for buying this and it did not disappoint.
