Joe Hinton was a gospel singer with a melodic tenor voice who was tempted to the bright lights and big pay days of R&B by Don Robey, owner of Duke/Peacock Records in Houston, Texas, who launched the Backbeat label as a vehicle for this fine soul talent.
He recorded more than a dozen singles between 1958 and his tragic death in August 1968, but only managed to aspire to the bright lights with his notable tender and striking version of Willie Nelsons country ballad Funny (How Time Slips Away), which rose into the national Top 20 in 1964. He followed that with an R&B hit the next year, then with an LP on Duke, and a further posthumous tribute LP was issued in 1973 when the catalogue was acquired by ABC, but neither LP has been available for the past three decades!
Shout Records is thus please and proud to issue the first CD re-issue combining the tracks from both LPs, which includes soul with a touch of gospel and blues, some jumping R&B and some breath-taking ballads.

At Last on cd!,

Shout records have to be admired for at last putting out the great Joe Hinton's wonderful recordings on cd ,I just wish the sound quality was a bit better. The recordings were licensed from Univeral (who own the Backbeat recordings) so you would expect the masters to be top quality but to my ears the sound is a bit flat and lifeless ,having heard Joe's "Funny how times" on an old Kent vinyl album from the 80's ,I know these recordings can sound a lot better but at the moment this is all we have so lets get to the music. Simply put ,these are some of the best records Don Robey ever put out on his label,if you love Bobby Bland or Junior Parker this is right up your street. The arrangements are by the great Joe Scott (Bobby Blands arranger and band leader) and have a lovely jazzy feel to them as well as being very well played. Joe Hinton was a great singer and it's a shame he has been all but forgot these last forty years but perhaps cd re issues like this one might help him to become better known. If you havent heard Joe ,do yourself a favour and give this disc a chance ,Joe was one of the greats!

This is classic Joe Hinton. I enjoy listening when sitting back with a glass of merlot waiting for the last vestiges of daylight to fade away.
