Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Of all her on-screen personas, Barbra Streisand sparkles in none as brightly as her role as 1930s comedian Fanny Brice in the musical Funny Girl. Wide-screen epic specialist William Wyler brings his personal touch to this vivacious 1968 film, an adaptation of Jule Styne and Robert Merrill's 1964 Broadway show that introduced Streisand to the world. In the belated sequel, Funny Lady from 1975, Streisand's Brice comes off as a harsher woman, slightly bitchy, without the tremendous charm she possessed in the first film. Herbert Ross takes over as director and the film just seems to get away from him. Much to the film's detriment, Funny Lady concentrates more on Brice's professional life than on her personal life, as the first film does. The songs are elaborately staged numbers that Brice performs in the theatres and while they are visually lush and spectacular they lack conviction. --Jenny Brown, Amazon.com

Funny Girl

One of the most popular musicals ever filmed, Funny Girl follows the careers of Fanny Brice - a role that earned Barbra Streisand the 1968 Oscar for best actress. Fany's unintentionally hilarious debut a a rollerskating chorus girl, makes her an instant sensation. Just one year later, Fanny's cheek, determination and sheer talent see her become the darling of the famous Ziegfeld Follies.

Funny Lady

Barbra Streisand is better than ever as the exuberant Fanny Brice in Funny Lady, the sequel to the Academy Award winner Funny Girl. This lavish, lively musical opens a new chapter in Fanny's career and love life. now divorced from wealthy Nick Arnstein, whe teams up with songwriter Billy Rose, a brash and unkempt producer - but a friendship soon turns into love.

Barb at her best 26 May 2004
Format:DVD
loosely based on Fanny Brice, these two films can show me something new every time I watch them.Fanny as a young girl is as gawky as they come but Miss Brice was a very determined lady, she wanted it all,and boy, does she achieve it. The appearance of Cairo Fred (Omar) adds to the thrills, the seduction scene in his hotel (Funny Girl) still holds the magic. Great songs, good story, magnificant cast.........

Voice of pure gold and personality to match.Funny Girl/Funny Lady are everything you expect them to be. Great productions. A legacy to Barbra's talents. Watching her in these productions, it was obvious she would go on to be regarded as one of the true greats. If you love her work, i don't need to say any more!

what a funny face! 12 Aug 2011
Format:DVD
Funny Girl was the first film of Barbra Streisland that I've watched; I was absolutely besotted by her face and feisty character. I enjoyed the Hollywood glitz too and the dancing girls; as well Omar Shirif was an excellent male lead. The face was still great in Funny Lady but I found the feisty character a bit wearing and the male lead was rather weak. So whereas I would give Girl 5 stars to my mind the two together merit only 4. I suppose this is partly because I found Lady a bit of a repeat of Girl.

No use to the deaf or hard of hearing...
Superb movies, with Barbra at the peak of her powers - and, yes, beauty, because somehow her face is always more than the sum of its parts.
