Review

Scooter-forums.com, Spring 2007
Benny Hill was at number one with 'Ernie - The Fastest Milkman In The West'. It was 1971 and the UK Government was about to impose new legislation restricting 16 year olds to 50cc mopeds. 'Funky Mopeds' is THE definitive work on the resulting frenzy of innovation from motorcycle manufacturers across the globe.
In 'Funky Mopeds' Richard Skelton tells the fascinating story, written by and starring the people who were there, of the wonderful machines that were so dear to the hearts of so many spotty 70's teenagers. A celebration of the sports moped, charting the history of a genre unwittingly created by the powers-that-be and killed off by more legislation just five years later. This book re-captures the spirit of happy and carefree times and looks at the bikes that gave freedom and mobility to a whole generation of teenagers.
With over 340 color pictures, the book has descriptions of all the sports mopeds, the stories of the peoplem

Product Description

A celebration of the sports moped charting the history of a genre created unwittingly by the government in 1972 and killed off by more legislation five years later. This book recaptures the spirit of happy and carefree times and looks at the bikes that gave freedom and mobility to a generation.

If you're red-blooded and somewhere between 35 and 50 the chances are that your first bike was a sports moped. This book takes you on a nostalgic full throttle trip back to the heady days of the 1970s and early 80s when these fabulous little superbikes were available to 16 year-olds. Packed with photos from past and present, this book will revive wonderful memories of the machines, the people, the fashions, and even the music of the time. Includes coverage of AJW, Batavus, Casal, Cimatti, Derbi, Fantic, Flandria, Garelli, Gilera, Gitane, Honda, Kreidler, KTM, Malaguti, Motobecane, Negrini, NVT, Puch, Suzuki, Testi, Yamaha and Zundapp.

...we were! Oh, come on, we were, but we were harmless and were having the time of our lives. Seriously (which is what every comic says when they are about to be anything but...?), this book is certainly about the 'Sports Moped' phenomenon and you will certainly learn a great deal about the bikes and their evolution, how innovators thrwarted governments at every turn and how the moped was the progenator of a generation of motorcyclists, to say nothing of the chicanery of both kid and parent in 'negotiating' the acquisition of our ticket to 'freedom', 'indpendence' and 'responsibility'. The work itself is most definitely written in an informative and engaging style that renders it an unmissable work for anyone interested in the subject and the culture. Aha! there it is, that extra little bit thrown in at the end; the culture. These bikes weren't about the bikes as such, they were about their impact on a generation, not just the one that became bikers for real, so to speak, but in the whole 'being' of being a kid (mostly male) in the mid '70's. And that is where this book's real value lies; in that it is a priceless historical document that sets out a snapshot, admittedly from a perspective of looking forward over the handlebars (though occasionally the garage floor), of life 'back then'. In doing so the first hand accounts are screamingly funny, particularly if that was you, you were there, knew 'a mate' who did such and such, heard them coming and saw them whizz by, fell over the swarm of 'peds in the college bike shed or indeed can just capture the whole experience in your mind's eye. All you need now is the music...now there's an idea; the 'funky mopeds' greatest hits (thanks to the reviewer who mentioned Brut 33 and school discos for planting that idea in my head..)! Pure magic. Buy it, borrow it, steal it, read it. A time recreated accurately and evocatively; we'll never do this again now the fun police have us in their sights.

Seen this book around for a couple of years and finally got round to buying it. It really is a blast from the past and took me right back to the early 70's when I bought my FSI-E. There are some great photos of all the sports mopeds that were around at the time- I'd forgotten how great some of them looked. A really good read that you'll keep revisiting - a must for anyone who got their first taste of freedom riding a moped as a sixteen year old, loved Barry Sheene and wore Brut 33 at the school disco.
