5.0 out of 5 stars The beginning... 13 Dec 2007
Format:Audio CD
Funkadelic's first offering from 1970 is a sprawling set of psychedelic guitars, echoing drums, spaced bass and vocal harmonies. The Invictus sessions that Parliament cut just a year before the release of this album bare some of these traits, but here they've been nurtured to perfection.

In terms of sound, this album bares a close resemblance to "Free Your Mind..." but is much more soulful. From FYM onwards the band was much rockier, "Maggot Brain" being the best example. Here however, their influences are clearly based in soul like The Temptations and the funk/soul/rock of Sly & the Family. The album then, while having the blues, the funk and rock that was that to be developed later on also has a lot more soul than any other that Funkadelic did.

The album opens with what would become standard practice: the long drawn out groove "Mommy, What's a...?" The next 2 songs are in a similar vein - both extended jams following on from set openings. The 4th track, "I got a thing..." is the first and only number with a bit of pace which drops into the last few songs which return to the earlier stretched groove. The extra tracks are definitely worth a listen because you can hear the development of the psychedelic sound they were after, but can also understand just how much blues is in the mix.

All in all an incredible album, different to those that would follow. The album both typifies their sound and is divergent because of the rawness of the soul and blues. An excellent purchase and a must for any P-Funk fans!

I'm not sure what the remastered version of this album is like. However, the original is one the best albums ever made. If you are into Psychedelic funk then you can not go wrong with this one. Every track spins you into another world. Turn this album up loud, lie down and float away. This is the first funkadelic album I heard and it blew my funkin mind - if you will suck my soul..... what is soul? I don't know! Soul is the ring around your bathtub...
Goddam it - get it - and be a convert.

If you don't like this one you are not a funkadelic fan. Also listen to Osmium by parliament.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly awesome 9 Dec 2011
Format:Audio CD
One of the greatest albums ever. I think Funkadelic went on to lose their way - their later work gets messier and messier. But this is tight, beat-driven, soulful, funky and glorious.
