a collection of the real deal 70's funk . Try the Commodores tracks from their early days - 3 Times a Lady they ain't. Add a couple of doses of funky drumming from the Meters and the hardly disguised Sly Stone and JB's and you have as good a funk compilation as there is. You will almost certainly find something on here you won't be familiar with and you won't be buying this unless you are into Funk so there will be something for you here.

New to the Funk? Well you won't find this the most accessible album, perhaps better to start with something like the Funked! (vols 1 to 3) sets which contain some of the more commercial and familiar. It is a funk bomb though.....

A great collection of classics from an era when great beats and funky rhythms came straight from the soul, rather than a computerized mixing device. Just read the title and if you think this may appeal to you, then I guarantee you shall not be disappointed!

more soul-funk stew 31 Jan. 2013

This is the third (and final?) entry in the surprisingly wonderful "Funk Drops" series of soul-funk rarities. I saw "surprisingly" because these came from the vaults of major labels like Warners and Atlantic, and you wouldn't think a major label would issue compilations as thorougly satisfying as these albums are. Then again, it also reveals the cut-throat nature of the music business that so many truly fine songs never were hits, or they languished in the vaults for many years/decades. But listen and love; these funk drops are mighty, mighty tasty indeed. Some surprisingly heavy early tracks from both the Commodores and Earth Wind & Fire, before both bands jumped labels and enjoyed pop success; two James Brown band members --- Bobby Byrd and Fred Wesley --- contribute a pair of very funky tracks; you also get the always thrilling Charles Wright & the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band; the legendary Curtis Mayfield; the always tight The Meters; underrated groups like Black Heat and New Birth; and oodles of obscure but very enjoyable artists, including amazing tracks from the Stovall Sisters and Rasputin's Stash. Along with the CD you get a booklet with track details and artist bios. Very good package and most excellent music.

Amazon has a track listing, but no artist names. Here's the full roster:
1. The Commodores
2. Barry Jones
3. Freddie & the Kinfolk
4. The Mighty Hannibal
5. Johnny Cameron & the Camerons
6. Rufus Thomas
7. Joyce Jones

Very good for Atlantic/WB... 26 Dec. 2012

I didn't know this record label (WB/Atlantic group) had a collection of funk like this one. The Commodores before they went to Motown? Joyce Jones? Pretty good!
To me, it seems the funk before '75 is ignored now since rap/hip hop can't sample it anymore. It's a good addition to any funk collection.
