5.0 out of 5 stars A must for funk fans, 5 Oct 2011
This review is from: The Funk Anthology (Audio CD)
Having emerged as a great blues guitarist in the 1950s, in the mid-70s Watson turned his mightily talented hand to funk and continued to enjoy well-deserved critical and commercial success. He wasn't just a stellar guitarist: a multi-instrumentalist, playing bass, drums and a variety of keyboards on these albums, he also composed almost all of the songs here and performed them with great verve and personality, sometimes sounding like Bootsy's groovy uncle. His contribution to 70s funk in particular has perhaps been slightly underrated.

This set is highly recommended: it's well-presented, with informative notes, and includes several inexplicably previously unreleased tracks ('Baby's in love with the radio' could surely have been a hit?) Just buy it.

I love this man in the same way I love James Brown. These guys are real workers when it comes to pleasing you life and even on record,it'll be hard not to move your tootsies...Listen to the starting riff on I'm a real mother for ya or on the number he co-played with Frank Zappa,in France,Jonny Guitar Watson always shines!
