Format: Paperback
Risk management is and always has been tricky, whether we are talking about business risk or project management risk or simply about flirting with a new market in an attempt to probe whether its conducive to business or not. The author of this book Paul Hopkin, a non-executive director of the Institute of Risk Management (IRM), attempts to both introduce as well as sequentially inform readers about the types of risk that could impact businesses.

Spread over 357 pages, the book is split into six parts, namely - Introduction for risk management, risk strategy, risk assessment, risk and organisations, risk response, and finally risk assurance and reporting. Hopkin's research is solid and the text is both free-flowing and well linked, intertwined with relevant tables, graphics and data. The author contextualises the subject, correctly noting that risk is sometimes defined as the uncertainty of outcome.

In generic terms, anyone can quantify some of the prevailent risks these days to be - terrorism, natural disasters and following 2008, a very real and clear global financial crisis, which we never thought was possible on a scale that we have witnessed. The author categorises these events and opines that they may inhibit what the business is trying to achieve (viz. hazard risks), create uncertainty about outcomes of processes (control risks) or last but not the least enhance what the organisation is doing (opportunity risks).

Lending weight to the author's take on risk are several case studies which I really liked because if a crucial topic such as risk is under the microscope - real world examples, from both public and private sector, are really appreciated. Furthermore, the book's glossary is also comprehensive.

It does exactly what it says on the tin, it makes belts and other such paraphernalia required or else it costs shedloads in the shops! :)
