Product Description

Product Description

For sophomore to senior-level courses in Digital Signal Processing and Signal Processing in departments of engineering and technology.

Conveying to students a sense of excitement regarding DSP, this text provides thorough coverage of digital signal processing techniques and all essential theory—extensively supported by examples, but not dependent on calculus. It includes a variety of interesting and in-depth DSP explorations to help establish the link between theory and practice, and an introduction to hardware and software for digital signal processors.

From the Back Cover

Digital signal processing (DSP) can no longer be considered the domain of graduate students and researchers. It now pervades the technology that we take for granted in our homes and offices, and its influence is growing. Increasingly, DSP is being considered an essential technical skill.

FUNDAMENTALS OFDIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSING was written to create an accessible resource for college and university students, engineers, and computer scientists who want to gain a working knowledge of the principles, applications, and language of DSP. To make the ideas accessible, calculus is not used in the main text. Essential mathematical topics needed to understand the material are included in an appendix.

All key concepts of DSP are covered in this text, including details of how to perform transforms and design filters. The coverage is heavily supported by examples throughout the text, which focus on real-life sounds such as speech, whale songs, and seismic vibrations and on real-life images such as fingerprints, bacteria, and airport X-rays.

The CD packaged with the book includes sample sounds, images, data, and movies for most chapters, as well as software for spectrograms and wavelets. The sun symbol in the margins of the text indicates illuminating material is available on the CD. Matlab™ files and examples of how to use them are also included so the reader can verify methods presented in the text and solve end-of-chapter problems with ease. Quick tests of basic chapter concepts are provided as well.

Instructors using this book will benefit from the accompanying Instructor's Manual with CD-ROM (ISBN: 0-13-033263-1).

This book is choice! 15 Jun 2002
By "jesse_smith" - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I recently took my first DSP class and it was taught by none other than Joyce Van de Vegte herself using this text. DSP has some fairly difficult concepts, but this text explains them very well.

Joyce is an excellent instructor, and I find the book is written in the exact same way that she explains them in class. Concepts are explained only as technically as necessary. This makes the text much easier to read and understand the first time around and most technical texts fail in this area.

Great text for introducing DSP 19 July 2008
By Book worm - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This text is very reader friendly. I have used this book in college and enjoyed it because of the fact that it is very clear and provides many illustrative examples to clarify certain concepts. I do agree with one reviewer in that its too bad it does not have solutions to the end of chapter problems, and for that I give it 4 stars instead of 5.

If you want to get a clear concept and understanding of DSP without the complicated and exhaustive mathematics from other books, then purchase this one and keep it in your personal library.
