Product Description

Product Description

This ebook is a combination of "Fundamental Chess Patterns", a directory of 101 patterns to be used as a reference, AND the complete analysis of the following patterns, originally contained in two other books of mine: Critical squares , Illusory Pin, Smothered Mate, Attack to the castled King. It presents also one game for most of the same patterns, and easy access to more games located on my Web site.

Compared to my former books, here, with a small increase of price, the size increases five times, with a lot of diagrams (300 total) to help understanding the patterns

It is not easy for beginners and intermediate players to learn how to play chess and improve their game. Instead of learning mainly through practice (which could take years) and the study of games of Masters (difficult to understand and easily forgotten), this book presents an inventory of weapons: Patterns which knowledge is essential to play well!

What you need to know before reading this book:
* How to use algebraic Chess Notation
* Basic mates
* A visualization of at least 4 plies without a board
* Standard tactical Devices, such as Counting, Forks, Skewers, Pins

What You Will Learn In This Book:
* Basic Patterns that every Player must know
* How to improve your Game
* How to use Opposition and Critical Squares
* Recognize the opportunity for Simplification
* How to attack the castled King
* Advanced Tips<

What you will NOT get, and why:
* Capablanca: nobody can learn to play well merely from the study of a book, it can only serve as a guide, and the rest must be done by the teacher

There's no limit to what's available to a Chess student today, but when a Knight checks your King in an endgame, do you know the best square where to move your King, to avoid being checked the next four moves? Just "click to look inside" to know.

It is a common opinion that strong players see a position divided in elementary groups (chunks), each having exact and known characteristics, due to the huge number of games they played, analyzed and stored in their deep memory. They immediately recognize winning patterns.

This book includes NO puzzles, BUT a choice of 101 essential patterns, which must be engraved in your mind, which you must recognize immediately , against you and to your advantage, without any doubt, no hesitation, at once. Not to lose your precious time in time trouble. Patterns whose knowledge is essential to be able to play well. Not lists of endless moves, impossible to remember, but positions that occur frequently, that you must recognize without thinking, the way Masters do.

   Are all these patterns known?
Sure they are, but this is not the point, a GM knows 10.000 +, a CM about 200, but what about you, can you afford not to know them?

Novice and intermediate players are the target of this book, class B and below, up to 1750 USCF Elo rating (approx 1650 Elo Fide).
Going periodically through them, will help you not to lose precious points and even to gain them, and your thinking time will be reduced. If you know them all instead, and never fell into them, great, do tournaments, and enjoy Evelyne Nicod's cat illustrations.
In the "Trapping a piece" section you can see the terrible blunder of Fisher in the 1st game of 1972 tournament, so to avoid it forever.

. Appearance is simple and neat, diagrams start at the appropriate move (Test link in preview). An Internet connection is needed. Better experience with Kindle Fire or PC

  Enjoy the reading

More About the Author

. To see all my books, just click on "Visit Amazon's Rodolfo Pardi page" above.

I got a degree in engineering in 1964, then designed electronic equipments for aircract (including CH47) for 25 years, went back to University for a two years course in BA, founded "Gatteria" (related to cats in Italian) producing and publishing cat related items, slowly fading out after 25 years.

Still holding a ham licence, learned 5 strings banjo 60 years ago, did cross country ski competitions, and climbed in the Alps, Italian mountain range.

Now I am a Fide rated chess player, a librarian, an Instructor and a Regional Tournament Director of FSI (Italian Chess Federation), engaged in activities for my chess club. No more an active player, as age no longer allows me to stand tournaments with two 5 hours games a day.

The experience I have being an arbiter, allows me to direcly see all the recurrent errors players do: expecially in blitz games and in endgames, that I closely watch, and where many moves look random.

The club library I attend has 1500 books, and so do I, the public library Braidense has the same amount of historical books: I am not saying I read them all, but I have access to all, and know what's not covered.

I prepared therefore 6 short booklets in English (out of 30 in different languages) about subjects not usually covered by training books.

While ebooks are expecially prepared for 6" monochromatic readers (600x800 dpi), they are better appreciated on colour displays, like the Kindle Fire.
There are plenty of neat diagrams, to reduce the need of a Chess Board, and, to be easily identified, piece names are not foreign capital letters, but figurines, designed for neat appearance, one of the first ebooks with this feature. (A symbol of the moving piece appears instead of an abbreviating letter, so anyone can follow in any language)

Target is novice and intermediate players, up to 1700 ELO.

For book covers and images inside books, I use the immense material prepared by Evelyne Nicod for Gatteria, this explains all the cat images, I find they release the tension.

While being an unknown foreign writer, and no chess champion, since one year I am in the five best places in the category in Amazon.com, sometime (rarely) best seller. Look at the reviews.

For this I thank the buyers, who are kind enough not to comment on the grammar errors, no chance after a lifetime to correct my English, not enough sales at that low price to pay a decent language revision.

Enjoy the reading and your games, easy and zen helps

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't Buy This Book Unless You Want to Improve Your Rating! 21 Dec 2013
By David J. Couture - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I gave this book 5-stars for multiple reasons:

1) The book itself is excellent. It shows and explains patterns that you see frequently and need to recognize immediately without calculating variations. The explanations go beyond just showing you the moves. For example, in his explanation of mating with just a rook and bishop against a safely castled king, he points out what the key move in the sequence is, which was an a-ha moment for me and permanently burned the pattern into my brain.
2) The book is a great value. It is a combination of his ebooks "FCP: a Handbook of Fundamental Chess Patterns", "The most important Chess Pattern: Opposition & Critical Squares", and "A Selection of additional Chess Patterns", along with a number of very useful appendices, one of which is made up of the games from which the various patterns and positions were taken. That's a lot of book for $1.99! You can't go wrong at that price and I can almost guarantee that if you are below expert (under 2000 USCF) you will find much that will be new to you.

Conclusion: Just buy it! It's a cliche, but true in this case, that it "would be a bargain at twice the price".
