4.0 out of 5 stars A stand alone game with quite a bit of skill needed, 10 Feb 2009

Carcassonne the Discovery is a stand alone game in the carcassonne family of tile laying games. I will asume you have already experience of the main game.
At the start i was annoyed it wasn't an add on but had a few plays anyway. The scoring system is slightly confusing to start with but the individual scoring sheets help. Basically theres 3 types of terain - (84 landscape tiles) in a mixture of mountains, grasslands & sea with 37 printed cities on the land parts, you can place your followers (only 4) on any of the terain types.
What makes it different to the main game is that you can either place a follower or score one not both on your turn, luckily you can choose to score your followers even when a feature is incomplete - remember you only have 4 and this is where the skill comes in, because even if a feature is complete - say a range of mountains, your follower(brigand) scores for each city in the mountains but also in the connecting grasslands around the mountains - one extra tile might give you 3 more cities but do you want to be able to put him somewhere else - this is where the skill comes in. Also if two players have managed to be on one feature both can score for it on their goes.
Yes after the initial disapointment i enjoyed the game, i only give it 4 stars because it is so far a stand alone.

4.0 out of 5 stars Discovery, 17 April 2009

Having got all original Carcassone and expansions ( and playing them in all cominations )this is something a bit different- a stand alone game that goes back to the basics, just followers and nothing else. The basic playing system is the same tile laying format, but, with only 4 followers, the skill is in their deployment. You can score on incomplete features and get followers back to start somewhere else. The scoring is a bit confusing initially but the scoring reference cards soon help make sense. Although not as varied as Carcassone and it's expansions, for a variation on a theme it is highly enjoyable and and allows for tactical subtlety. Brilliant for when you haven't got time for a full blown game of Carcassone.
