Fun at the Gymkhana Club,
By Howard Male "Howard Male" (London) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Fun at the Gymkhana Club (Audio CD)
It's fortunate that Lola Olafisoye's stage persona marries the slinky sensuality of Eartha Kitt with the forbidding robotics of Grace Jones because this makes her the perfect front-person for this North London four-piece who've made something new from late-70's, early-80's, art school funk. Lola purrs and growls her way through some angular, archly stylized songs bringing to mind bands as diverse as the Au Pairs and Japan without ever sounding like either.

Fun indeed,
This review is from: Fun at the Gymkhana Club (Audio CD)
Having been rather taken by the video for single 'Don't be shy', I expected a sound crossed between Goldfrapp and Bow Wow Wow. While the music here is more funk than electro-burundi(!) there is still enough sleaze/innuendo to satisfy my expectancies. The double-entendres are rife, from 'Horny Pony' to 'Sugar Bowl' but are far from merely Carry-On farce. The outro is seemingly a satire on the opening to Kelis' Tasty album.
Back to the music and there isn't much to suggest an act that has taken the dancefloor by storm which I read somewhere. This is often quite light dance, almost hypnotic with the soothing playful tones of singer Lola just bubbling over the surface. It reminds me occasionaly of Helicopter Girl. The tempo does pick up on some songs, mainly the singles and the track 'Oh build an army' is arguably the best. I cannot compare this to their first album which seems to have only rave reviews, but from my insight into Spektrum I would say they are more than an act borrowing from the 80s. They are trying to make their music sound 'now'. The only problem is knowing when they are serious. With all the playful innuendo and knowing allusions, it is sometimes hard to tell. The chorus of 'The Mirror Man' for me is so bad that I wonder if it was done on purpose for example?
