Great for beginners,

I was starting to think Javascript was difficult. It isn't, I was just reading the wrong books! Forget the dummies and idiot guides, this is by far the easiest introductory book I have read and (ahem..) I've read a few ;)

Don't let the title of this book put you off. I can't praise this book highly enough. J. Shelley takes a very relaxed but professional approach in teaching a very useful programming language. I like the way he explains the object-oriented side of things, something which I had difficulty in understanding until I read this book. His whole approach makes you feel confident enough to start programming after the first two or three chapters. As other reviews mention he lacks understanding of the Netscape environment but he does repeatedly point out the differences which is the important thing to be aware of. Overall I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning Javascript. Very well written and presented. Thank you Mr. Shelley.

Not bad, so long as you don't want too much from JavaScript,

This book assumes a decent knowledge of HTML, which is nice, since some other books feel they need to walk you through HTML as well as JavaScript. However, don't expect too much from this book though it is a good introduction.One amusing aspect is that Mr. Shelley often finds himself confusing himself in his eforts to explain the way JavaScript works. In summary, if you want to start learning JavaScript, this is a good start, but it may not answer all your questions, and certainly will not make you a JavaScript master.
