It was a warm and dry day in October 2010 that I first laid my hands on the Fulton Windbreaker brolly. In the two years since then, the weather has often been far from warm and dry and the winds have been high. This brolly has faced them all with some style. It is remarkably robust and compact. Even now it is in perfect condition. The only minor issue that has emerged has been a bit of rust on one of the arms, but that was due to me leaving it wet for a while. User's error and all that.

Pros.
-Very compact for such a robust umbrella (even held up against the wind alley effect of Southampton High Street);
-Nice and wide cover (can fit two people comfortably even if there are wider ones out there, few are such compact ones)
-Good value. In the two years passed since I bought this my girlfriend has had to buy 3 umbrellas after the others have failed (often at exactly the moment you needed it). This is going strong.
-Automatic pop up button is top notch and is still going strong after heaven knows how many uses (when the heavens open!)

Cons (or rather areas of improvement)
-The extent of the struts in the umbrella (which give it its strength) does make it a little heavier than normal, however, it is not excessive and more than a little comforting!
-Handle is maybe a little short but not excessively so;
-The joints do sometimes stick and push into the material which was a bit of a worry, but so far the material has shown no bad effects from this and it can easier be sorted.

Overall, this is top brolly at a top price. They have been making umbrellas for years and when the sad day comes that this umbrella does give up the ghost (if it ever does) it will be another Fulton to take its place. Could not recommend strongly enough!

In short - it's held up to the miserable weather we have in London really well. I've used it in some heavy winds and it's not even come close to turning inside out.
Very pleased with this and a good price too.

After only a dozen times usage, it broke. Not because of strong winds, but simply by pushing the button to open it. One of the ribs broke and metal pieces flew everywhere cutting my right hand a little left hand finger in the process.

I bought this in the knowledge that Fulton are an excellent brand for umbrellas, and based on the reviews on this page. I'm sad to say that my experience has been far from the best.

The umbrella is lovely - the opening mechanism is smooth, and it stands up to wind extremely well. Unfortunately, there is a major design flaw in the way that the arms attach to the end of the fabric - it is a tiny piece of string that in my case has broken on one of the arms within a week of owning it. This isn't through misuse or lack of care - I've taken especially good care of the umbrella due to its price, but even so, it has still broken, rendering the umbrella useless. I believe that the fabric has broken simply because of the force with which the umbrella opens when the button is pressed - like I said, this is a major design flaw.

I'm rather disappointed in all honesty - I bet this never happened to the Queen!

This is about as manly as a telescopic umbrella can get. It is black and erects itself at the press of a button. Once erected, you can marvel at the engineering of ribs, struts and stretchers that keep the canopy drum taught through blustery squalls. A larger handle and an end spike for fending off hooligans might further improve the device.

Having spent a while browsing the reviews on Amazon, was somewhat bemused - why could I not find a replacement for my lovely collapsible which has served me for at least 5-7 years in London but is now a little worn? Checking the brand & model, I find it is a Fulton Windbreaker. I have repaired it with duct tape, sewed back on to broken ribs, used and abused it for years, it still works perfectly but now it is developing a lacy appearance near the centre. But I love it - it is sturdy, light, minimalist. Not for me the notion that an umbrella should withstand any abuse and never need a simple repair. I want another! I will get another!

Having for some bizarre reason spent years buying those rubbish cheap umbrellas you get on the high street and in some reputable chemist stores, and not surprisingly seeing them last only a few months before breaking in some way (usually one of the struts is the first to go) I finally hit upon the brilliant idea of using Amazon.

I really don't think you can complain about the price, having still got my full size James Smith umbrella which cost me £50 - now that's an expensive umbrella. Frankly under £20 for a proper foldaway umbrella that just feels so much better made, can seemingly take any wind, and is solid and dependable to use, is a very good price indeed. I love all the extra mechanism they have engineered into the struts too - a mini marvel of engineering - and haven't yet had the canopy detachment others report, after a few months. It is a little heavier than most foldaways, but that's kind of what you are paying for. More metal means more weight but also more strength.

Still, let's see what a full British winter does to it....
