I had already bought a couple of Michael Chapman Albums including the excellent 'Navigation' but when I heard this I was shocked by how new it sounded. This is a truly timeless record with an astoundingly high quality of musicianship and songwriting the whole way through. The twisted violins of 'Aviator' and the bitter lyrics of the awesome 'Kodak Ghosts' spoke to me far more than any music around at the time (this being the summer of 1998 when Britain was listening to the Verve and Spiritualised and still reeling from 'OK Computer') and actually sounded as modern as anything on the rock scene at the time. Perhaps worryingly, it still does.

In addition to Chapman's awesome fingerstyle guitar, Mick Ronson (later to play with Bowie for the whole Ziggy Stardust period) plays electric lead and Rick Kemp (later of Steeleye Span and perhaps the most underrated Bass player of all time) plays bass.

If you want to hear something that sounds truly different, but amazingly well written and shot through with lyrical darkness and musical imagination I can only recommend you buy this album.

My only word of warning is that you could find yourself losing interest in contemporary music altogether and even trying to learn fingerstyle guitar as a consequence.

First heard Postcards of scarborough (Michael's hit) on Picnic a harvest sampler in the mid eighties. I was captivated by the melancholic voice and the stunning guitar playing. The album was one of John Peels favourites of 1970 and has weathered far better than a lot of its contempories. Michaels intricate guitar, his anecdotal lyrics dealing with travel, loss and memories are easy to connect with. High points: Aviator with its cellos, the bass on Kodak ghosts, the simplicity and beauty of Rabbit Hills and the thrash acoustic guitar on Stranger in the room. A genius and an institution, buy this album and see him live

A real favourite. 21 July 2003

This stunning follow up to the excellent Rainmaker was released in 1970. Chapmans impassioned, gravely voice and acoustic guitar are helped along by Mick Ronson on lead guitar, Rick Kemp on bass and Barry Morgan on drums.
The lengthy Aviator opens proceedings and is just superb. Strong and passionate. The group being augmentd by some fine violin. Naked Ladies & Electric Ragtime is a catchy foot tapper with Chapman unaccompanied. Stranger in the Room is more hard rock than most of his work but is an excellent song with some fine hard-edged interjections from Ronson.
Chapmans subtle guitarwork then leads us into the powerful Postcards of Scarborough. One of his most remebered songs. Gritty grainy singing but also some contrasting bitter-sweet string section combine to dynamic effect. Very haunting.
The up tempo rocker Soulfull Lady follows the short solo Fishbeard Sunset. It chugs along nicely with more strong contributions from the pre- Bowie Ronson.
Rabbit Hills is another fine example of Chapmans unique, emotional take on the ballad. What a fine album this is.
March Rain again is a slowy, but again it is memorable with a fine cello statement from Paul Buckmaster to help things along. Kodak Ghosts comes next and just maybe the best track. It is just a great piece of music. Great singing, great acoustic guitar, quietly great electric guitar, all great. The funky Trinkets & Rings draws things to a fine close with more sterling performances from all concerned.
Probably categorised as folk/rock way back then but to me it is just great songmaking with sounds relevant to that time. And I still think it sounds wonderful today. A real favourite.
