Balanced view of a consummate musician,
By Merovingius (UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Full with Wills (Paperback)
Arthur Wills is, by any yardstick, a seemingly modest man with an ability to create liturgical and recital music of integrity and elegance. Presiding for so many years as organist and director of music amidst the glories of Ely's fenland Cathedral, Wills has had the time and the purpose to create things there of great beauty - the choir and organ serving the Church year to the highest standards without fail. His compositions are reasonably well known and his many students attest to his performance ideals and skills. His legacy is probably secure and deservedly so. However, like so many fine musicians who have made their way in the organ lofts of the great Cathedrals of the UK the path has not always been smooth. Volatile relationships with clergy, difficult adult members of the choir, a struggle to secure adequate rehearsal time for choristers and the usual problems of funding are just some of the stuff of these Church Musicians' lives. An evident need for tact, ingenuity and, where necessary a little righteous anger are all the stuff of the musician's craft. Arthur Wills is not flamboyant, never a tyrant to man or choir-boy, and always a servant of the liturgy to the very highest standards attainable. Those who are cited in this useful and fascinating text clearly have the highest respect for Wills. Those at large who admire his music and musicianship will be grateful for this memoire and commentary on the life of an institutional musician that has done much to preserve Anglican worship as a rich, holistic and Holy purpose.
