Full Metal panic is a japanese anime TV series that is sure to appeal to most anime fans. The story sees Sousuke Sagara, a war hardened veteran of the anti terrorist organisation 'Mithril' being given his toughest mission yet. To guard seemingly normal school girl Kaname Chidori as she carries out her everyday life. Kaname Chidori is the target of a group of terrorists who want to kidnap her as they believe she contains special powers. So the basic premise of these 24 episodes is Mithril's struggle against the terrorist organisation while protecting the girl.
The pacing and style of this anime is really good as there will be several episodes of intense action and mecha battles, followed by stand alone comedy episodes following Sousuke's misadventures while he is trying to fit in as an undercover student at school. I like the way that they have done this, because it gives us a bit of a break after the action packed episodes, as well as some diversity in the series, while at the same time, creating some nice characterisation.
One of full metal panic's main strengths is it's entertaining and likeable charcacters such as Sousuke's comrades who happen to be a hopeless womaniser and a feisty sergent. Furthermore, our two protagonists, Sousuke and Kaname are an excellent duo, as Kaname often gets stressed out with Sousukes's mishaps, leading to hilarious results.
However, despite the comedy found here, there is still plenty of heart as you genuinely begin to care about all these characters. These excellent characters are portrayed brilliantly by their english voice actors (I didn't watch the Japanese).
Prolific voice actors found here are Chris Patton (Guyver, Gantz, Full Metal Alchemist,)
Luci Christian (Puni Puni Poemy, Rumbling Hearts, Guyver)
and Vic Mignogna (Full Metal Alchemist, The Wallflower, Dragon ball Z).
The artwork in this series is amazing as it was created by the acclaimed studio Gonzo, who worked on projects such as Afro Samurai, Gantz and Hellsing. The music also very nice, especially the opning theme, which is incredibly catchy.
This set contains 7 discs, but unfortunately there are very few special features. Just the usual Trailers, textless openings and endings and some production art.
Overall, this is an excellent anime that will fly by. There is something for all anime fans here; plenty of action, great characters, laugh out loud comedy and some fan service and an excellent story. More-over this series can be quite cliff-hangery, making it hard to lose interest.
If you enjoy this series then you should check out the two sequel series'. There is Full Metal Panic Fumoffu, and Full Metal Panic the Second Raid.
