5.0 out of 5 stars Great little device, 10 Jun 2010

This review is from: Contec Full-Colour OLED USB Finger Pulse Oximeter & Heart Rate Monitor w/ 24hr Memory, Lanyard, 3pin UK USB Adapter, Carry Case & Full Analysis Software
I spent a fair bit of time researching finger pulse oximeters. Whilst the majority featured 'live' data display, I was looking for one which I could use to measure my SP02 and heart rate during a nights sleep to diagnose possible sleep apnoea. The CMS-50E was the cheapest model I could find on the market with 24hr memory storage and USB facility so that you could wake in the morning and download the results to your PC. The device arrived well packaged in a small blue box and was complete with manual, software CD, lanyard and USB lead. Overall I was very pleased with this item. I have summarised below :

Pros :
Compact and easy to use
Display is very colourful, sharp and has the ability to be rotated.
Excellent Analysis software. Gives you the opportunity to record over a 24hrs period and give you some hard data which you can keep or take to your GP / consultant if needed.
High and Low alarm function, allowing you to preset Oxygen saturation and pulse limits for audible and visual alarms to trigger.
Memory storage or 'Real time' data transfer to PC software.
Excellent long life Li-Poly battery (USB charged)

Cons :
Manual - Although fairly detailed, it has obviously been translated from Chinese to English (Rather poorly). Not really a gripe as by using a little common sense its easily deciphered!

4.0 out of 5 stars Title factually incorrect, 10 Jun 2011
This review is from: Contec Full-Colour OLED USB Finger Pulse Oximeter & Heart Rate Monitor w/ 24hr Memory, Lanyard, 3pin UK USB Adapter, Carry Case & Full Analysis Software
Re the title --- a pulse oximeter by definition measures pulse rate, not heart rate. The difference is important because people with irregular heart beats (arrythmias) may have a faster heart rate than their pulse rate. This is because the heart actually may not generate an output (pulse)with every beat if it is contracting too fast to refill completely. Just a point because heart rate tends to be of more clinical interest to doctors.

3.0 out of 5 stars Contec Full Colour OLED USB Finger Pulse Oximeter, 13 Dec 2010

*Just Received a return address by email for repair, will update review on completed repair*
The following review is pre repair/replacement;
In my Case this Pulse Oximeter is Excellent providing it's used on the patient and results are read off its own screen - it's almost as accurate as far more expensive medical equipment we have at work.
Problems arise on my unit on USB connection to an I7 PC (far beyond minimum specs for live data monitoring)
On my unit despite it illuminating a blue led to show it's charging via USB the supplied monitoring software can be very temperamental, and not even detect it more often than not
I strongly suspect dry soldering joints on my models internal mini Usb terminal from the supply date in the device to be the cause, as the unit is still displaying Sats and pulse on its own screen when it cannot be detected on a PC, then sometimes it will suddenly connect - which to my mind suggests a problem between it and the software or it's data cable
It seems many emails to clinical guard so far has had them suggest i treat live monitoring as you would an Usb connected camera (which are obviously not alive and breathing)
This unit connects to Human beings and they will move their finger slightly even if asked to remain still politely, that is normal in any clinical situation. And it's this slight (1cm-2cm) movement that can disconnect mine from live Pc monitoring.
From emails received in my case I have the strong impression Clinical Guard are more interested in selling me a further "wireless kit" instead of addressing the fact that my unit might be faulty.
In short, this is an excellent device as a standalone Pulse Oximeter, if mine wasn't faulty via USB I would have given it 5 stars- i feel let down by seemingly poor quality sales-lead hungry staff at the other end when you have an issue that requires a repair/replacement who in my case do not actually realise what the display menu even says on giving full model numbers and incredibly detailed emails on what is not working correctly.
I have spent considerable time emailing this company with valid information,to be supplied with incorrect instructions for this specific model and suggestions like that of treating it as one would a camera is insulting.
