This unmissable best of collection of Gang Starr classics is a record accessible to devout fans and those with only a passing interest in Hip-Hop.
Guru has always been an intriguing MC for me. A man faithful to his roots but one of the few MC´s who feels drawn to the music´s origins, new wave Jazz and 70´s soul and funk. This CD reflects Guru and Premier´s wide musical palette.
The opening track,"Full clip," with his dedication,"Big L rest in peace," is an indication of where their soul lies in the music but as you work your way through this CD you start to appreciate their genre transcending range.
"Mass appeal," underlines the quality these two had right from the start. "Ex girl to next girl," is an amazing track. Here you see Guru´s dexterity as an MC and his ability as a storyteller accompanied by Premier´s rumbustuous scratching. For me this is one of the greatest tracks they have recorded.
"Jazz thing," is a homage to their many influences. "You know my Steez," is another classic, popular with biggest fans of,"gangsta" rap. "Soliloquy of choas," shows just how lyrically sensitive Guru can be. What I love about him is that he is a social commentator, he doesn´t attach much glamour to the reality he decribes.
While they are clearly production masters what really hits home on this is their interest in music, they´re just trying to make money.
If you are like me and only have a passing interest in hip-hop this duo serve up music that always tries to do something different and I seriously recommend it. One of the only original voices in Hip-hop.
