Product Description

Product Description

In October 2009 Ellen MacArthur, one of the greatest sportswomen in the world, announced her retirement from competitive sailing. Many were in disbelief. How could the woman who had fought so hard to set so many records give up racing? But Ellen had found an even tougher challenge than sailing solo round the globe.

Now Ellen is ready to write about her incredible last ten years, including the trip which changed her life.

She speaks honestly about the trials of fame after coming second in the Vendee Globe in 2001; about her frustrations in missing the record for the West-East transatlantic crossing by just 75 minutes in 2004; the dramatic capsize and dismasting she experienced prior to her record attempt, and then the ultimate triumph of her spectacular, record-breaking, non-stop solo circumnavigation of the globe in 2004-5, sharing every painful and exciting moment of her 71 days alone at sea.

And of course she tells of the fateful trip to South Georgia in 2005 which caused her to decide to leave competitive sailing behind for ever and focus all her ambition and energy towards a new and much bigger race . . .

Ellen's searingly honest story is a story of triumph over incredible adversity and will inspire others to follow in this remarkable woman's wake.

Full Circle 11 Mar 2011
Format:Hardcover
This book is simply a wonderful read. It brings to life vividly Ellen's passion for life, for sailing and for the things she believes in in a way that makes one feel one was out there on the high seas with her and it also makes one very much respect the work she is currently doing.

That said, I still miss the exciteming of clicking into the internet several times each day whilst I tracked her progress and at times, feared for her life as she sailed through mountainous seas in pursuit of another record.

Full circle describes and explains it all brilliantly. A great book.

Most readers of Ellen's latest book will be familiar with her sailing exploits, and this aims to bring her story, or journey as she calls it, up to date. As an author she starts with two great advantages. Firstly, in my opinion, Ellen is a good writer, and secondly she has experienced things that very few of us could possibly contemplate. The first half of the book revisits her early Vendee Globe and round the world sailing exploits. Readers who are not sailors or skippers (in the reading sense) might find the repetition and detail rather hard going but in fairness to the author she could hardly have done it in any other way.
Next comes an interesting section on her visit to South Georgia. I found Ellen's description of what is left of the old whaling station at Grytviken very illuminating as were her encounters with the albatross and her efforts to assist in its preservation. I remember seeing a TV program of Ellen on Albatross Island some time ago and the plight of the albatross obviously made a big impression on her.
The Ellen MacArthur Trust set up to introduce young people suffering from cancer to sailing has been a great and lasting achievement, and as always Ellen has thrown herself whole heartedly into this activity with the most gratifying results. We learn a lot more about her family and especially her remarkable gran - there must be something in the genes! We also learn just a little about her love life. As you would expect Ellen does nothing by halves.
The last part of the book recounts her latest passion which is conservation. She would find a kindred soul in The Prince of Wales. I found her views on the subject not entirely convincing but this is something readers will have to make up their own minds about.
I enjoyed reading this book because Ellen is a very interesting person and it was nice to find out what she has been up to since leaving the limelight, but I was left puzzling over two things. Firstly why is it that someone so courageous and tough spends so much time crying? (I am really soft but never cry). Just as well perhaps that we are not all the same. The second thing that puzzles me is that she keeps coming across inspirational characters, and whenever she meets someone new they seem to get on like a house on fire. Also everyone is very efficient at their job and there seem to be no square pegs in Ellen's life of round holes. Suffice to say that Ellen's experience of mankind does not accord with mine. She is clearly a very complex and deep character which probably accounts for her having achieved so much. Anyway she still remains one of my all time heros and I look forward to finding out what happens next.
