Book Description

24 Sep 2013
The landmark work on mindfulness, meditation, and healing, now revised and updated after twenty-five years
Stress. It can sap our energy, undermine  our health if we let it, even shorten our lives. It makes us more vulnerable to anxiety and depression, disconnection and disease. Based on Jon Kabat-Zinn’s renowned mindfulness-based stress reduction program, this classic, groundbreaking work—which gave rise to a whole new field in medicine and psychology—shows you how to use medically proven mind-body approaches derived from meditation and yoga to counteract stress, establish greater balance of body and mind, and stimulate well-being and healing. By engaging in these mindfulness practices and integrating them into your life from moment to moment and from day to day, you can learn to manage chronic pain, promote optimal healing, reduce anxiety and feelings of panic, and improve the overall quality of your life, relationships, and social networks. This second edition features results from recent studies on the science of mindfulness, a new Introduction, up-to-date statistics, and an extensive updated reading list. Full Catastrophe Living is a book for the young and the old, the well and the ill, and anyone trying to live a healthier and saner life in our fast-paced world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to the practice of mindfulness meditation! 19 Nov 2013
By Sarah E. Everett - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I remember when Bill Moyers first interviewed Jon Kabat-Zinn and I have been interested in mindfulness meditation off and on ever since. Five months ago I lost my husband. I also have Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency or "inherited emphysema" and I am on oxygen 24/7. This past summer the stress from both became unbearable. So I bought the book. It is an extremely easy read and the author lulls you into the practice, little by little, from page one. I am now a convert and I plan to take a live course the beginning of next year. I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still so relevant -- good update 14 Oct 2013
By M. Wolf - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a great book and this update does not detract or do more than was originally presented. I am a social worker in a medical setting. This book is great in that first and foremost it provides a reminder, a vision, a focus, a lessons on being in the moment and the power of being in the moment for me. It also provides a rich source to help the people I work with.

If you are looking for a book that helps the focusing on the moment and looking at what is right (as opposed to what is wrong) this is great. While I as well as other may have "diagnosis" it is not in the diagnosis where I will find wellness. Being present, which is needed to see strengths, is where wellness is to be found. This is a great book for being in the moment so the journey to wellness can progress.

Highly recommended for anyone wanting to learn about mindfulness, healing, wellness, and how to cope with pain or other chronic conditions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Book Ever on Stress and Mindfulness 28 Oct 2013
By McDee - Published on
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I came across this book recently while reading an article in the Mayo Clinic Health Letter on mindfulness and I am so glad that I did. Down to earth, logical information on reducing stress and how to not react to stress in the same (not working for me) manner. I wish that I had known about it years ago; it is that useful! I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to reduce his or her reaction to the stresses in life and life a longer, happier life.

2.0 out of 5 stars Problems, for me, with the Kindle version... 20 Jan 2014
By Sascha Suenos - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
I love this book-- so much, I had two paper copies of it, one which I marked up, and one which I kept pristine.

The Kindle version, however, has insurmountable drawbacks for me.

The Kindle version is still great, imho, for straight reading. But if reading the book convinces you to put the program to use, well...for that you need to be able to easily find lots of different chapters, pages and sections, and I find it way too difficult to get where I want to go with neither a table of contents or index.

If I had it to do over again, I might still get the Kindle, in order to have the book with me in, shall we say, Stress Emergencies, as something to read for a quick perspective adjustment and calmer-- because for me, reading pretty much anywhere in the book can accomplish that.

Still, it bugs me that I spent the money on the Kindle, yet still have to allocate at-a-premium shelf space to my big, fat, paper copy, for when I want to actually work the program day by day according to his instructions/suggestions.
