Two Selectable Paper Paths
Switch the S1100's paper output guide to either the folded position for the straight path or the open position for the U-turn path to best suit the document you want to scan. While the straight path is best suited for scanning postcards, photos, business cards, plastic cards and when using the ScanSnap carrier sheet, the U-turn path will allow double-sided documents printed on common office paper to come back into your direction so you can easily insert the back side of the document in the scanner again. The U-turn path will also greatly reduce the foot-print of your already very compact ScanSnap.

The installation of the device software was painless and quick, and the instructions that came with it were easy to follow. The scanner itself also produces perfectly acceptable scan results and there are several different default options for the quality; these being small file size, high quality and recommended. I would say that the high quality scan settings only have a very marginal improvement in detail, and only scans at about half the speed, so from my point of view, I would probably use the standard settings. The colour rendering is also very accurate, so users shouldn't have anything to worry about here.
If using the default settings, it is very quick to operate. Simply plug it in to your USB port, insert the sheet of paper and press the scan button on the device. However, one of the downsides is that you can only insert one sheet of paper at a time i.e. there is no document feeder. Obviously this is the price to be paid for the scanner being so portable and in any event, it's still easy to scan multiple documents as it will continue to automatically scan each page inserted into the same document until the user tells it to stop. If you try to feed the documents into the scanner too quickly (i.e. don't leave enough time for the 1st page to clear before inserting another) it will jam, although these are always easy to clear and the only effect of it is that you have to start from the beginning again!
Many different types of documents can also be scanned as the paper can either be fed out through the top or the back. Therefore, you can scan anything from paper to card to credit cards.
The output files from the scan can be saved in many different formats, ranging from the usual pdf or Microsoft Office document to JPEG picture file or printing directly. Some of the software also has great potential for managing documents in any environment, such as Evernote which allows you to keep all your scans organised, however you do need to be careful that you don't accidently share sensitive documents with other Evernote users!
From my review, you'll have noticed that I haven't mentioned many downsides to this portable scanner, other than it can jam if the paper is fed too quickly and that there is no document feeder. However, this is because I can't spot any others and hence I really do believe this is an ideal product for any modern paperless office!
When looking for something like this, I assumed I'd have to find a scanner which would scan to PDF file and then I'd have to have use Evernote to import them. This goes one better... it has direct Evernote integration. I press the button (only one) on the scanner, feed in the sheets I want to scan and press the button again when I'm finished. The way I have it set up is that the PDF file (OCR and text searchable) is right there in Evernote! All I need to do it give the Note a title. It's just so unbelievably simple.
I can change this setup so it scans a PDF or JPG to a given folder, or into iPhoto or into Pages - or pretty much any other combination I wanted. It's extremly flexible, and does exactly what I want.
The scan quality is great - the way the scanner "grabs" the page means it is perfectly (and I mean perfectly) aligned so straight lines are straight, not diagonal when scanned. I was really genuinely surprised at the quality of the scans this takes. It's perfect for my use of scanning receipts and documents from banks / solicitors etc. etc.
At first, I thought it couldn't scan thick(ish) card ... since it scans and "twists" the paper up 90 degrees, the card would jam. But, I soon realised that if you don't lift the flap that "twists" the paper, you can scan thick card and it just goes straight through from back to front. I felt a bit stupid, since it took me weeks to work this out! Still, it only makes it better.
I love it!
It draws it's power from the USB port so doesn't need any power cable. The USB cord is built in so you won't lose or forget it.
Despite it's small neat size it scans remarkably accurately and quickly. At 200dpi, it took 21 seconds to scan and perform software conversion on a complex document. At 300dpi scan resolution, it took 26 seconds to scan and convert. So it's ideal for scanning the odd document when out and about but would be tiresome scanning reams of documents.
It's a sheet-fed rather than a flatbed scanner. It also only scans on one side only. (they call it simplex scanning)
Given that portability is it's strong point I found the results amazing. It was easy to set up on my mac and windows machines and it wasn't faster or slower with either.
However the S1100 relies on non-standard drivers. Whilst other scanners can be used with any TWAIN-compatible software packages, the S1100 restricts you to their specially-modified software. Fortunately Fujitsu has included some decent bundled software.
If you're after scanning in piles and piles of documents then perhaps you should look at one with a document feeder which tend to be bigger and rather less portable.
It's not cheap, but if you're after an ultra portable with superb results then look no further.
