FUJIFILM

Building on the global success of the highly acclaimed FUJIFILM X-E1 – awarded 2013's Best Expert CSC by the Technical Image Press Association – the X-E2 takes image quality to a dynamic new level that is comparable with full-frame cameras. It delivers even more beautiful colour reproduction, higher definition image capture, and the world's fastest AF speed of 0.08 seconds**. Available in retro cool 2-tone silver and classic black.

X-E2
X-E2

Exceptional design and features

The X-E2's brilliant shutter speed is achieved by more than doubling the processing speed*** of the EXR Processor II. It is able to harness the information taken from over 100,000 phase detection pixels incorporated in the X-Trans CMOS II. The hybrid AF also combines phase detection AF and contrast AF to ensure accuracy when shooting low-contrast subjects and dark scenes.

The X-E2's 16.3 Megapixel APS-C sized X-Trans CMOS II Sensor incorporates an original colour filter array. This eliminates the need for an optical low pass filter that typically minimises moiré but does so at the expense of resolution. Instead, the X-Trans CMOS II sensor can capture unfiltered light from the lens for an unprecedented level of image clarity.

Quality is further improved by the Lens Modulation Optimiser (LMO). Its high-precision processing of the various lens parameters as well as data from the screen centre to the edges, corrects diffraction blur when shooting with a stopped down aperture and compensates for the slight blurring in the lens periphery. The result is edge-to-edge image quality with incredible sharpness. LMO is compatible with every XF lens.

The X-E2's prestigious feel continues with the combination of aperture ring on the lens and shutter dial on the top of the body as seen in its predecessor, allowing full shooting control while keeping your eye to the viewfinder. It allows the user to shoot and operate the camera without needing to look away from the viewfinder. Exposure compensation has been increased to the scope of ±3. Every X-E2 owner can also customise up to 4 buttons on the top and back of the camera to suit their own shooting style. The premium clear LCD monitor size has been increased to 3.0-inches but the body is thinner. It has a high viewing angle and 1.04 million dot reinforced glass. The scratch-resistant surface reduces reflections and improves visibility, making it easier to check image quality.

Fast and accurate focusing means you'll never miss a moment

Thanks to the X-E2's ultra-fast response you won't miss a single photo opportunity. In addition to achieving a world's fastest AF, the X-E2 has a rapid start up time (0.5 seconds****), virtually no shutter lag (0.05 seconds), and high-speed continuous shooting of 7.0 frames per second (up to 28 frames) *****.

Accurate and comfortable focusing comes courtesy of the hybrid AF. It combines a contrast AF that is strong in low light situations and a phase detection AF that's superb for capturing moving objects. With the improvement of the detection algorithm, it's easier than ever to focus on difficult low contrast subjects and horizontal striped patterns. The camera automatically switches between the two AF modes and focusing continues right up to the moment the shutter is pressed during continuous AF.

Prestigious sensor delivers brilliant image quality

Using the same X-Trans CMOS II sensor as the critically acclaimed X100S, the brilliant sensor technology controls moiré and false colour generation. By using an original colour filter array with a highly randomised pixel arrangement, the need for an Optical Low Pass Filter (OLPF), known to degrade resolution, won't be necessary.

Image quality is further increased by the inclusion of the first Lens Modulation Optimiser for interchangeable lens cameras. The EXR Processor II image engine corrects even slight blur at the edges of the lens, as well as diffraction blur caused when narrowing the aperture. This great camera is able to maximise the resolving and individual imaging power of each lens. Ultimately, the sensor and engine combination achieves astonishing resolution, extends dynamic range, and reduces noise at high sensitivity levels.

X-E2 Focus
X-E2 Focus

Manual focus made easier with Digital Split Image Technology******

The user can achieve pin-sharp focusing by simply adjusting focus to line up the four stripes displayed in the central part of the live view and match the left and right split images. Focus Peak Highlight - the highlighting of the outline in high contrast areas of the subject during focusing – enables the user to achieve critically sharp shots.

Improved movie performance

The X-E2 shoots Full HD video up to 60fps (1920x1080) and the AF tracking performance in movie mode has been improved with good focusing speed, accuracy and smoothness. Quick tracking of the subject is possible in a variety of situations, such as when panning and zooming, or when the subject moves closer to or further from, the camera.

Wirelessly transfer your images

You can easily transfer images wirelessly from the X-E2 to your smartphone or tablet after installing the free FUJIFILM Camera Application app. There are no troublesome ID and password settings; just press the Wi-Fi button on top of the camera and then add the images directly to your blog or share them with friends on your social networking site. You can also use the X-E2's built-in Wi-Fi to save your photos to your PC.

Various modes to capture your creativity

By selecting from one of 10 variations you can shoot your images how you want them. Choose from Velvia to give beautifully vivid colours, ASTIA is suitable for portraits, PROVIA is a natural all-rounder, while the softer Pro Neg.Std, and sharper Pro Neg.Hi, are perfect for indoor portraiture. Sepia film simulation is also possible while creative black & white photography can be enjoyed using three different filter effects. Film simulation bracketing is also handy for generating three film styles from one shot. In addition, there are eight Advanced Filter options for extra creativity, including Toy Camera, Miniature, Dynamic Tone, Pop Color, Soft Focus, High Key, Low Key, and Partial Color.

Extra functions

Through the in-camera RAW development function, a RAW image can be converted to JPEG without a computer, while 14bit RAW capture enables RAW conversion with richer tonality. The built-in Super Intelligent Flash gives the right amount of light for the scene, while overexposure when using a flash for macro photography is also controlled.

5.0 out of 5 stars (Nearly) as good as I expected 7 Jan 2014
Style Name:With 18-55mm Lens Kit| Colour Name:Silver|Verified Purchase
I entered the world of Fujifilm cameras when I bought a second hand X100 (also from Amazon). I love this camera. it's a digital emulation of a film camera. I love the controls, the feel of it in my hands and it's film emulation (the camera's sensor is wonderful and the fujifilm colours really good). It made me want to take photographs and I did. At the time I had a Panasonic G3 which I loved. Once I'd bought the X100, I barely touched it. However, I missed replaceable lens. I liked the look of the X E1 but prevaricated until along came the X E2.

My expectations were really high and, they have, in large, been met or exceeded. Compared to my X100, it has a better sensor, more modes, better manual focussing, is faster. The list goes on. Again, the camera feels great to hold and is amazing to look at (I've been accused of being a hipster, what cheek). The kit lens is really, really good (unlike every other kit lens that I've ever bought). I've also bought the 50-200mm and 27mm lenses, both excellent. I've really enjoyed this camera and have taken it out a lot and taken photographs in all sorts of situations. I continue to find new joys. To say that I really like this camera is an understatement. I sold the G3 and the lenses that I'd bought through Amazon

Two very minor points. I really like the X100's optical viewfinder, that's missing on the X E2. However the electronic viewfinder is really, really good. So, a bit of a downside, but very minor. The second grumble is the electronic split screen manual focussing. I've found few situations where I find it useful. I had imagined it would be like the old split-prism days, but sadly it isn't. Meanwhile, the manual and auto-focussing are both very fast and accurate under a wide range of light conditions.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best choice for a mirrorless 22 Dec 2013
Style Name:Body Only| Colour Name:Black|Verified Purchase
-Great sensor, great lenses map
-Same quality of a full frame, extraordinary
-All the controls in your hand
-One of the bests electronic viewfinders
-WhatYouSeeIsWhatYouGet, so you're saving time and effort of your workflow
-Focus peaking for Manual Focus, aesome! I can use now Manual focusing, not as I discarded from my old DSLR
-Firmware updates for adding functions during its lifetime (no other brand do that)

-Recommend: buy a handgrip for a better subjection in your hands and begin with a no zoom lens
-Menus scheme could be better

5.0 out of 5 stars new photographic buzz 30 May 2014
By S. Gee
Style Name:Body Only|Colour Name:Black
What a lovely piece of kit the x-e2 is.

Having used a 35mm film SLR in my youth and then a series of compact cameras, I have been taking photographs with Canon DSLRs for the last 7 years and have built up a reasonably useful range of lenses and other pieces of kit. However, over the last year I have been getting increasingly fed up with lugging it all around, and reflecting on whether all this gear is really helping my photography. I am a fan of street photography and find that my big, very noticeable Canon 60D was making the surreptitious existence of a wannabe street photographer more and more tricky.

Following a good deal of research and some testing in Calumet and Jessops, I decided to take the plunge and buy the x-e2 while the free lens offer was running. As yet I have not received my fuji lens (I'm 3 weeks in - think they may be taking their time to encourage me to buy another while I wait) so am shooting manual using an old Canon FD lens and adapter. Manual focus is a breeze with the focus assist settings via the electronic view finder and I find that everything I need is at the tips of my fingers.

In short I am really loving the experience of taking photographs with my new camera, and believe that this feeling will grow as I invest in a range of lenses, all of which appear to be of exceptional quality. There are any number of pros to this camera, and a few cons which I feel are relatively easily dealt with - hence 5 stars.

Pros:

- image quality - when focused properly images are pin sharp and exposure, white balance, colour and contrast are all excellent - this is especially notable in dark conditions where my Canon 60D would sometimes struggle to get it right.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great camera - quality of build just lacking 8 Jan 2014
Style Name:With 18-55mm Lens Kit|Colour Name:Black
I have had forays in the past away from DSLR cameras and have found previous compact models severely wanting in comparison. However I have always been frustrated with the bulk of SLR cameras and their sheer intrusiveness to the subject. I have been watching the mirrorless market for some time waiting for the time when sensor size, high ISO performance, AF performance and lens quality could approach that of an SLR. This Fuji came close enough in a camera shop hands on test to convince me to take the plunge and after a couple of days of use I am convinced enough to make the switch.

The main advantage to me with this type of camera is that you get a true live view on the screen and when you hit the shutter that is what you get. You can adjust the shutter speed, aperture or ISO and the rear screen shows the impact of the changes in real time. This makes setting the camera manually very quick and almost idiot proof. Also with a lens ring for aperture and shutter speed dial these settings are easily accessible.

The JPEG images out of this camera are excellent requiring no real processing and there are plenty of in camera options to adjust how the photo will look such as sharpening and noise reduction.

You can use this camera up to ISO 3200 with no real loss in image quality and 6400 is perfectly usable. Accompanied with the inbuilt flash which can be held vertically to bounce this is a great camera for indoor use and will give you tack sharp indoor images that are worth keeping.

There are a few areas on this camera that need improving to earn it the full 5 stars. At the price the build quality should be better.
