After a number of days of intensive use, I intended to write a thorough account of my opinions of this camera. However, on reading joc66's review above, I find that she has said just about everything that I intended to. I would still like to summarise my thoughts about this camera:
Yes, the first thing I too noticed was how small it is. Truly a pocketable camera, although it is surprisingly heavy for its size. This may reflect the quality of construction, or just reflect the size of the zoom lens when fully extended. And this lens really impresses me. Having a range of 27mm to 270 mm, in effect quite wide angle to significant telephoto (please see my photographic examples attached), this is quite an achievement for a camera of this size. Combined with the excellent CCD, this camera gives very good quality images. The zoom itself operates quite smoothly.
There is a variety of settings available on this camera's function dial. I suspect most people will use Auto function, which is what I did most of the time, and apart from one shot where the lighting very suddenly changed due to cloud (a hazard in our country), exposures were all fine. Even the 'difficult' shot was perfectly acceptable. You can of course experiment to your heart's content with the various other modes available, but in my experience most cameras these days manage very well in their 'auto' mode, where you just leave it to the camera. I did like the idea of being able to overide the auto function shot though; if you want to learn the basics of exposure (shutter speed, aperture, and ISO) this camera will give you some opportunity, although not as much as a full SLR of course. (I still fondly remember learning the basics with my wonderful old Pentax SLR in the 70's). The more complex menu-selected options I have not yet tried out.
There is no viewfinder, which I find regrettable, but that's pretty standard on compacts these days. The LCD screen is large and clear and its brightness can be adjusted, although I did have some problems in very bright sunshine. Getting back to the overall image quality, I would like to point out that I had no problems with colour fringing, looking at images on a 19" computer monitor. Apparently pictures of trees against the sky test this, so I duly took a couple of shots in the local park and have attached these too.
The one area I felt that was not entirely satisfactory was taking video. The zoom acted too fast for me, and this threw the autofocus for a few seconds.
Despite days of intensive use, the battery is still showing nearly full charge, which is good. The battery itself is a very thin one , similar to those used in mobile phones. The memory card (not supplied) is, as usual, SD.
To conclude, I think if you want a compact camera with a 10X zoom, then this is definitely worth considering.
