Product Description

The Fuji FinePix F70EXR is compact yet powerful. It features an extreme sensor Super CCD EXR which provides superior picture quality along with 10x optical zoom which brings distant action close up and captures is like never before. Furthermore with Dual Image Stabilization to defeat blur from camera shake even long zoom photos come out sharp.------A fantastic addition to the FinePix F70EXR EXR Auto takes the guesswork out of setting the camera by doing everything for you. EXR Auto is essentially a very sophisticated set of program modes. The camera will automatically switch the sensor to HR SN or DR mode depending on the lighting conditions of the scene as well as automatically detect 6 different types of scenes - Portrait Landscape Macro Backlit Portrait Night and Night Portrait. The camera will recognize the scene and optimise focus colour balance exposure flash and sensitivity. Users of the FinePix F70EXR will rely heavily on EXR Auto for their general photography letting the camera ?do all the hard work? and leaving the photographer free to concentrate on getting the best shot possible.------The FinePix F70EXR is fitted with the same EXR Priority modes as its more premium F and S sister cameras (F200EXR and S200EXR). Users can choose to default to High Resolution Priority (HR) High ISO & Low Noise Priority (SN) or D-Range Priority (DR) (up to 800%) for consistent shooting (for instance always choosing ?best dynamic range? whatever the lighting conditions).

Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Must confess I am a lazy photographer and will happily take whatever technical assistance the manufacturers can offer. Owning DSLRs and compacts,I need a camera for leisure and work that is flexible, fast, reliable and easy to use.

Enter the F70(also available in silver) and the first reaction on taking it out of the box was how touchy feely the body is. Strangely tactile, the rounded body invites handling and is pleasant to hold, much more so than my current Panasonic FX-550 and also appears to have better build quality.Mild disappointment followed that the Fuji was deeper than the Panasonic BUT the class leading 10x zoom is the explanation, being the equivalent of 27-270mm in 35mm speak. And, the zoom is fantastic, easy to control and puts the Panasonic to shame.

Another eye opener for me is the clarity of the screen. Far, far better in bright light than the Panasonic and Sony we tested the Fuji against.

The Fuji's EXR mode essentially lets the camera choose the best programme mode and worked very well, only being beaten by the Panny when dealing with an external shot on full zoom that had a dark interior and bright surround. As others have said, the downside is that the resolution halves but 6 or even 5 megapixels should be more than enough for normal sized prints.

The quite extraordinary Pro Focus and Pro Low-light modes using multiple exposures both impressed but our personal 'wow' moment came with the Fuji's ability to consistently produce red eye free images of the complete family inc the all important cat!Very, very impressive.

A simple to use mode dial allows easy selection of the usual wide selection of shooting modes but I do think that if you want to dig deeper into manual selection, the operation then becomes much less intuitive. And the easy start guide is a little basic and I personally don't want to have to fire up the PC to read the manual contained on the CD. Yes you can print it off but please Fuji and others, give us a paper copy!

We also particularly liked the quick and easy way you can move between playback and shooting. Other manufacturers please take note!

Downsides are relatively few as far as this family is concerned. No HD video that others offer these days and just watch that you don't block the flash with your fingers. For someone who wants to get very creative and exercise much more control, the means of doing so is there but not so obviously accessible.

In summary, a really good compact with an exceptional zoom, clear screen and good range of features that will not disappoint the majority of point and shooters.

This camera is impressive - it fits in your pocket so you can take it everywhere with you - and it features a 10x optical zoom lens yet it's the same size as cameras with only 4x optical zoom! I think the camera looks best in gun metal grey (dark grey), although the silver is still nice, Fujifilm Finepix F70EXR Digital Camera - Silver (10MP, 3x Zoom) 2.7 inch LCD, and the camera is stylish with a solid feeling metal body, although it's a little bit slippery so a wrist strap is recommended.

The camera takes SD / SDHC cards - and a 4GB one will store about 950 photos at the highest resolution and quality. Battery life is okay - I was able to get 225 shots from a full charge - it would be nice if this was higher.

But enough about that - how good are the photos? Well, Fuji have the EXR sensor, this give you 10 megapixel photos (HR High Resolution mode), or 5 megapixel photos. The 5 megapixel modes are called SN High ISO and Low Noise - this takes a photo and gives you lower noise than if you were using the 10mp mode, and there's also the D-Range Priority mode - this exposes for both bright subjects and dark subjects giving you detail in both. It works well, but can be confusing at times trying to set the best mode - alternatively you can set it to EXR Auto and hope for the best. The results can be very impressive, with extra Dynamic Range meaning you will have less over-exposed skies, and lower noise.

Fuji have perhaps gone overboard with features - there's a manual mode - useful for concerts (set a high shutter speed), there's a pro-focus mode that will blur the background of an image, and there's also a pro low-light night mode that will take 4 photos (tripod needed) and combine them to make an impressive low noise, high detail image (both of these are at 5mp).

Image quality can be very very good - especially if you can work out which settings and modes work best for you. If left on auto it's possible that you won't get the best results. There's also some purple fringing in images especially around trees or areas of high contrast. The macro mode is very good, colours are very good, and VERY colourful on Velvia, and detail is good.

Overall I think this is a very appealling camera - it can do so much stuff - more than you'll probably ever need (and therefore can get confusing) - but it also takes some great photos and fits very nicely into your pocket. The fact that this is the world's smallest 10x optical zoom camera, means that whenever I go out I'm most likely to take this camera with me, and I'm regularly impressed by the results. Forget about the megapixels race - pick a camera that works for you, and use the 10mp or 5mp mode (depending on the scene), to get the best results from this camera.

Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
After a number of days of intensive use, I intended to write a thorough account of my opinions of this camera. However, on reading joc66's review above, I find that she has said just about everything that I intended to. I would still like to summarise my thoughts about this camera:

Yes, the first thing I too noticed was how small it is. Truly a pocketable camera, although it is surprisingly heavy for its size. This may reflect the quality of construction, or just reflect the size of the zoom lens when fully extended. And this lens really impresses me. Having a range of 27mm to 270 mm, in effect quite wide angle to significant telephoto (please see my photographic examples attached), this is quite an achievement for a camera of this size. Combined with the excellent CCD, this camera gives very good quality images. The zoom itself operates quite smoothly.

There is a variety of settings available on this camera's function dial. I suspect most people will use Auto function, which is what I did most of the time, and apart from one shot where the lighting very suddenly changed due to cloud (a hazard in our country), exposures were all fine. Even the 'difficult' shot was perfectly acceptable. You can of course experiment to your heart's content with the various other modes available, but in my experience most cameras these days manage very well in their 'auto' mode, where you just leave it to the camera. I did like the idea of being able to overide the auto function shot though; if you want to learn the basics of exposure (shutter speed, aperture, and ISO) this camera will give you some opportunity, although not as much as a full SLR of course. (I still fondly remember learning the basics with my wonderful old Pentax SLR in the 70's). The more complex menu-selected options I have not yet tried out.

There is no viewfinder, which I find regrettable, but that's pretty standard on compacts these days. The LCD screen is large and clear and its brightness can be adjusted, although I did have some problems in very bright sunshine. Getting back to the overall image quality, I would like to point out that I had no problems with colour fringing, looking at images on a 19" computer monitor. Apparently pictures of trees against the sky test this, so I duly took a couple of shots in the local park and have attached these too.

The one area I felt that was not entirely satisfactory was taking video. The zoom acted too fast for me, and this threw the autofocus for a few seconds.

Despite days of intensive use, the battery is still showing nearly full charge, which is good. The battery itself is a very thin one , similar to those used in mobile phones. The memory card (not supplied) is, as usual, SD.

To conclude, I think if you want a compact camera with a 10X zoom, then this is definitely worth considering.
