I got this camera because DSLR cameras seemed totally overwhelming when all I know how about photography is that you point and click a button. This one is really great because it comes with an Automatic setting that takes very nice photos on its own, for those of us who are too stupid to know what aperture is. Then it also comes with a very READABLE and clear manual which explains all the extra features, so as you build confidence you can start experimenting. Initially I took a lot of photos using Auto, then now a month or so later as I have learned how to use the extra features, I can really see how much better my photos are compared to in the beginning. My favourite is the black and white mode which takes absolutely gorgeous, clear pictures.
It comes with a nice neck strap which I find comfortable to wear all day when I am walking around in town on holiday if I want to. It also comes with the cable you need to connect it to your computer and get the photos off it. (not sure why another reviewer said it didn't!). It DOES NOT come with a memory card (also called a Flash card for those of us newbies) so you have to spend £6 or so getting one. The one Amazon 'suggests' is just fine. The flash/memory card is the only extra thing you need to buy to make this camera usable out of the box.
for those of you who are wondering... the "hot shoe" on the camera is a little sliding connector on top which means if you purchase an extra flash, it can slide onto the top of the camera.
and if you are on a budget you can get a little Hama Star 61 Tripod for about £12.
