Manufacturer's Description

For style, functionality and affordability look no further than the FinePix JZ500. This smart snapper has all the technology you need to take great photos in a simple, point-and-shoot package. With its smooth sculpted curves and high-quality metal body, the JZ500 packs away a massive 10x Fujinon zoom but is still small enough to slip in to a pocket or bag, making it the perfect companion for days out with family and friends.

The JZ500's slender shell hides
a massive 10x zoom range

Fujinon 10x Optical Zoom & 14 Megapixels
The combination of a high precision Fujinon Lens and astounding 14 megapixel resolution will reveal impressive picture quality. The versatile 10x zoom is tucked away in the camera's delicate frame meaning you're ready to shoot wide-angle vistas or dramatic close-up shots from a pocketable package. Fujinon optics are renowned by professionals worldwide, used in industries including broadcast and aerospace, so you can be sure the Fujinon brand is a mark of quality.

Effective Anti-blur Technology
The JZ500 features Fujifilm's highly effective Dual Image Stabilisation system to combat against blurred images. By combining high ISO sensitivity and CCD-shift technology this camera is able to minimise blur often caused by camera shake and subject movement, even when shooting at the full 10x zoom.

Good Low-light Performer
Photos taken in low light are often the most disappointing. The JZ500 features impressive ISO sensitivity to 3200* meaning it is ultra-sensitive in dim conditions and able to record impressive detail and true to life colours with minimal noise. You can also select the ISO settings manually, so if it's a nice, bright sunny day you can select a low ISO (e.g. 100), or if conditions are dark, high ISO settings will be better at picking up detail.
*Number of recorded pixels is limited to maximum 3 megapixels. At full resolution sensitivity is limited to a maximum ISO1600.

Pet friendly Pet Detection technology
can detect cats and dogs in a scene and
optimises focus and exposure

HDTV-Compatible Photos & Video
Capture both photos and movies (720p) in HD format and bring your photos to life. The FinePix JZ500 lets you discover the impact of full-screen HDTV image display in the comfort of your own home.
*Optional HD Player HDP-L1 is required to view photos and movies on HDTVs.

Perfect Pet Pictures
Pet Detection is great for those who love to capture snaps of their four-legged friends. Similar to Face Detection, Pet Detection can identify dogs' and cats' faces in a frame and optimises focus and exposure, giving you perfect portraits of your pets. There's also an Auto Release function which automatically takes a photos as soon as your furry friend looks at the camera, ensuring you don't miss that precious shot.
*Up to 10 dog or cat faces at a time. Cannot detect pet faces in profile or both dogs and cats in the same scene.

Face Recognition
This clever camera can recognise faces in the frame by name. All you have to do is register up to eight of your favourite people e.g. 'Mum' and the JZ500 will recognise that person from that point on and optimises focus and exposure for that person. Face Recognition also lets you group and sort your photos by your registered faces - a great time saver when you want to show someone that one photo.

Tracking AF 'locks on' to a
moving subject keeping it in focus

Intelligent Scene Detection Technology
The FinePix JZ500 can detect up to six commonly photographed scenes and optimises focus, exposure and white balance to suit the scene being shot. The scenes it can recognise are: Portrait, Landscape, Night, Macro, Night Portrait, Backlit Portrait. Perfect pictures every time.

Tracking Auto Focus
Ideal when photographing fast moving subjects or action shots, Tracking AF will 'lock on' to moving subjects. Half press the shutter button and Tracking AF will track the subject and keep it in focus. As soon as you fully press the shutter button you will capture a photo with the subject perfectly in focus.

I have been looking for a super zoom compact camera for a while now and each time I thought I had found one, I then found some bad reviews which put me off purchasing. I therefore decided to wait and buy this new Fujifilm JZ500, blind, as soon as it was released and take my chances because if I had purchased one with a bad review I would have kicked myself if I suffered the same fate. I was not dissapointed! 14MP with 10x Optical Zoom......what more can I ask for.......

Pros: Very, very compact in size. Large clear screen, lots of easy modes including a 2nd auto that selects the correct mode for you, e.g. landscape, portraint, macro, etc. As you turn the wheel to each mode it comes up on screen to show what each one is for making it very user friendly. Also very easy to adjust light exposure settings, etc if so desired. Takes great pics and videos.

Cons: You need to buy a SDHC card (Class 6) to get the maximum record time on HD video, even so it is only 20 mins on an 8gb card. However the std video mode is good enough to make up for this and the length of recording time is much higher.

Overall this is a great little camera and I am glad I decided to buy this one rather than one of the others on the market.

I waited a long time before finally taking the plunge and ordering this fabulous little camera. I read a lot of reviews on a lot of similar cameras and kept finding there was always something not quite right for me. As a result I put off replacing my early Pentax Digital camera which was one of the first with a 5x optical zoom. The Fuji sports a fantastic 10x optical zoom lens and yet is no bigger than my little Pentax. It is also a whopping 14 megapixels and has all the features of a much more expensive piece of kit. I first looked at the similar model in a well known camera store. I loved the weight and feel of this neat little camera and was seriously considering buying it. When I looked on Amazon I noticed this camera was a slightly different model number but a lot cheaper. (The shop model was exclusive to the shop.) I carefully checked out
the two models and could find little or no difference (certainly nothing obvious or which mattered to me) apart from the price. So, with heart in mouth I placed my order and very soon received my new all singing, all dancing camera. Whilst I had been terrified of making a mistake, I need not have worried.

The Fuji JZ500 has been brilliant. It is a joy to use, comfortable to hold (which is important to me as I have some movement difficulties in my hands). The shutter is responsive (an issue with the old Pentax) and the large screen is a fabulous. It is even acceptable in bright sunlight (which worried me as there is no viewfinder).

All in all I would recommend this little camera to anyone looking for a simple to operate point and shoot camera as well as to those looking for something with a little more user control. I personally love the choice of ready prepared options at the touch of a wheel.

I bought this camera in Oct 2010 for our daughter who is a budding amateur photographer.

After plenty of research and reading reviews we settled on this little fuji as a good compromise between cost, the 10x optical zoom and perceived fuji quality.

When it arrived I was mildy disappointed with the feel and construction, wondering if it would be robust enough. On the morning of her birthday I was really disappointed with the poor grainy quality of the images but didn't make anything of it as I didn't want to dampen her enthusiasm. Instead I put it down to the poor indoor light and us learning to use the camera properly.

The subsequent quality has proved to be very inconsistent (whatever situation or mode is used) with some great shots and some shockers all under the same conditions.

In early Jan 2011, as she was printing directly from the camera, the screen went white and despite switching it off, removing the battery & card, leaving it for a bit etc, it refused to work. We worked out that the camera was still functioning, ie it was taking pictures that we could download, but the display had stopped functioning.

I contacted the Amazon seller who directed us to the Fuji warranty centre online as it was covered under warranty. Filled in the forms, packed it up, sent it off and tracked it online until it's return 10 days later with a replaced LCD screen.

The warm glow from receiving such good customer service fizzled out within 24 hours, when exactly the same fault occurred.

Have just packaged it up to send off again, but our confidence in the camera is shot. I was interested to note that the warranty reference number had risen by over 1150 in the two weeks between filling in the returns form...

Other reviews here and elsewhere bear out some happy customers, so we may have been unlucky, but thought anyone considering this camera should be aware.

Just bought this camera to go on holiday. Needed reasonably low priced small easy to use point and shoot that would fit into shorts or pants pockets.
    This one fitted the bill.
    Takes great pictures.
I used the fireworks settings to take stills of firework display.
I used the HD movie mode to record part of fireworks display and on a trip out to take HD video of white water waves crashing over rocks.
I used the close up of flowers mode for a single flower close up.
And many scenic views and portrait type holiday pictures.

Did not come with SD card so extra cost to add one - I got 8GB card which will do about 45 mins of HD video/around 1500 still
Shooting focus is via LCD screen which is good in all but bright light when glare makes it difficult to see the image on the screen but this is a downside of all point and shoots.
The other downside is the instruction manual was on CD disc so unless you have a computer or laptop on holiday with you will have to memorise the many settings, keep going through the menu screens on the camera or print the manual out yourself.

All in all very good practical everyday point and shoot which has given some excellent results from my 2 weeks worth of holiday pictures.
