Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

Stylish and compact. Big Zoom. Fantastic image quality. The FinePix F80EXR has it all. With award-winning EXR sensor technology, the FinePix F80EXR is well equipped to take breathtaking photos in challenging conditions where other compacts would struggle; like low light and high contrast scenes. Plus, Full HD photo and 720p HD movie coupled with Dual Image Stabilisation ensure this camera delivers the high standard of image quality Fujifilm is renowned for.

What's more, this smart snapper will suit every member of the family, no matter what their experience behind the lens; optional manual controls will please the more discerning photographer, while EXR Auto offers point-and-shoot simplicity.

Fujifilm's award-winning EXR sensor can
adapt its behaviour to suit different
shooting conditions

Little Camera. Big Zoom
The FinePix F80EXR's slender 22.7mm metal shell is only a fraction bigger than standard 5x zoom cameras yet it impressively hides a massive 10x zoom, so you have all the convenience of a 'pocketable' camera, with a versatile zoom range that covers everything from wide-angle landscape shots to dramatic close-ups.

EXR Image Quality
This multi-award winning sensor can adapt its pixel layout to optimise results for different light situations where some compacts would really struggle. EXR has three selectable sensor modes; these can be manually controlled by the user, or for total ease-of-use select EXR Auto and let the camera do the thinking for you. The three EXR modes are:
HR (High Resolution) mode Ideal for when the light is strong and even. Ensures every small detail is recorded at the highest resolution.
DR (Wide Dynamic Range) mode Use this mode when light is strong but contrasty. The sensor will take two exposures for both highlights and shadows and merge them to reveal a single image with impressive detail and balance across the whole scene.
SN (High Sensitivity & Low Noise) Great when light is limited. This mode 'couples up' pixels to create larger pixels that are able to record more detail in low light and ensures noise levels are kept to an absolute minimum.

EXR AUTO Scene Recognition
A clever technology that matches the most appropriate EXR mode to the scene you are photographing. Not only are focus, exposure and white balance optimised but the best EXR mode is selected to best suit the light conditions present when shooting, giving you flawless results at the press of a button.

With a convenient HDMi port you can
connect the F80EXR directly to a HDTV

Stunning High Definition
Sit in the comfort of your front room and share those special memories with friends and family in stunning high definition. The FinePix F80EXR features full HD for photos and videos. Simply connect your camera to a HDTV via the camera's micro HDMi port* and let the show commence.
*Cable required. Sold separately

Achieve professional looking portraits
with Pro Focus mode

Shoot like a Pro
Pro Focus Mode emulates the gentle, out-of-focus background look that can normally only be achieved on a DSLR, and is perfect for photographing macro and portrait subjects. This creative mode uses multi-frame technology to take multiple shots of a scene at varying depths of field and merges them together in-camera to create an image with a sharply focused subject set against a soft, out-of-focus background.

Amazing Low-light Capabilities
Pro Low-light Mode is perfect for shooting stationary subjects in poorly illuminated conditions. Using multi frame technology, it takes four high sensitivity/low noise shots in quick succession and merges them into a single image with less noise than the single exposures.

Effective Anti-blur System
By combining high ISO sensitivity settings and CCD shift technology the F80EXR is able to reduce the effects of camera shake and subject movement to deliver virtually blur-free photos, even when shooting at the full 10x zoom.

Tracking Auto Focus
Ideal when photographing fast moving subjects or action shots, Tracking AF will 'lock on' to moving subjects and keep them in focus. Simply half press the shutter button and Tracking AF will track and keep focus on your subject. As soon as you fully press the shutter button you will capture a photo with the subject perfectly in focus.

Pet Detection technology can detect cats
and dogs in a scene and optimises focus and
exposure for perfect pictures of your pets

Face Recognition
This clever camera can recognise faces in the frame by name. All you have to do is register up to eight of your favourite faces, e.g. take a photo mum and tell the camera that it is 'Mum', and the F80EXR will recognise that person from that point on. It will even go as far as to optimise focus and exposure for the registered person in a picture in preference of others. Face Recognition lets you group and sort your photos by your registered faces - a brilliant timesaver.

Perfect Pet Pictures
The F80EXR isn't just about people; it's got some clever Pet Detection technology, too. This works in a similar way to Face Detection technology, and can identify up to ten cats or dogs in a scene and optimises the settings for your four-legged friends rather than any distracting background. What's more, Auto Shutter Release will automatically take a photo as soon as your pet looks at the camera which will ensure you don't miss that precious shot.
*Up to 10 dog or cat faces at a time. Cannot detect pet faces in profile or both dogs and cats in the same scene.

I replaced my ageing Fuji F20 with the F80EXR and am very impressed. The EXR Auto mode works well most of the time when outisde, but for inside or lower light shots, you really do need to experiment with all the different modes and settings to see what works best. The "sunset" mode seems disappointing so far compared to my F20 but maybe I need to fiddle with settings a bit more to get a better result.

I had read some reviews that said the picture quality was not as good as the F70EXR, but with the F80EXR having a 720P HD movie mode I thought that would be a good trade-off. I have not been disappointed with the quality of either stills or HD video. (Note - SD cards are limited to 2Gb files, so if you have an 8Gb card, you can only record 11min of HD video at once. An 8Gb card will hold 44min but you have to record 4 x 11min clips. This could be a little frustrating!)

The camera can take multiple shots in quick succession (5 at max resolution or 23 at lower resolution) and these are good for capturing action or movement when it can be difficult getting just the shot you want.

Battery life is quite poor compared to my old camera, so I would advise buying a spare battery so you can have one charged and ready to replace the one that will run out just as you need it most!

I highly recommend this camera as long as you have the time and inclination to get to know its capabilities.

Not quite a five star 20 Oct 2010

I purchased this camera to replace my ancient Olympus that bit the dust (literally) when I fell over in France. I was first attracted to the Fuji F200EXR by a glowing review in Computer Shopper but found that it had been superseded by the F70EXR. That camera was almost immediately replaced by this model and so after much research it came down to this one or an equivalent Panasonic. What swung it for me was the EXR technology and I have to say that, after much experimentation, leaving the camera on the EXR Auto setting produces pictures perfectly exposed with a brilliant dynamic range - way better than just leaving it on Auto or Manual and in a totally different class than the old Olympus. It achieves the wide dynamic range in the EXR mode by simultaneously taking one slightly underexposed picture and one slightly overexposed picture and then combining them into a single picture. This means that the finished picture has improved shadow and highlight detail. I don't think that any other manufacturer has any technology like this.

The metal body is well made with a very attractive high gloss finish. The lens seems to be pretty good with a very useful zoom range. No camera shake on maximum zoom which is amazing. The battery and memory card flap seems to be a little flimsy though. As somebody else has commented the EXR mode does drain the battery - but not excessively.

So why not five stars? Well, another much vaunted feature, that really attracted me in the various reviews, is the SP mode which is creates a pin sharp picture with soft focus background, After much fiddling about I have now got this to work and the effect is very impressive. Be aware that it needs a lot of trial and error. I found that standing back and using the zoom seems to be the best bet.

Overall a beautifully made camera and highly recommended

Oh, by the way it's just been replaced by the F300EXR I believe!

    Delighted 13 Aug 2010

I am delighted with this camera. I am an enthusiatic photographer but neither have the knowledge or really the time and inclination to have a complicated camera. This suits me well, the ease of the camera, the excellent assistance while using it. I am delighted with the results and would highly recommend this camera. The zoom is excellent with the added bonus a higher zoom can be added. It's perfect for me and I hope some-one else has the same lovely experience with one as I do. Enjoy!
