FinePix F600EXR: The Ultimate Travel Companion

The 16 megapixel EXR-CMOS sensor in the F600EXR now features EXR Auto with a Motion Detection capability to virtually reduce subject blur in all lighting conditions. The built-in GPS functionality adds a GPS Landmark Navigator feature to help pin-point locations, and the 15x wide-angle optical zoom lens now doubles its telephoto power thanks to the new intelligent digital zoom mode. It all stacks up to make the FinePix F600EXR a dynamic package and one that will set new standards in the premium compact camera market. The FinePix F600EXR is available in black, red and white.

Intelligent Digital Zoom pulls in the most distant details
Intelligent Digital Zoom pulls in the most distant details

Intelligent Digital Zoom

The FinePix F600EXR is no slouch when it comes to zoom capability, featuring a wide-reaching 15x optical zoom, which offers the 35mm equivalent of a 24-360mm lens. This ensures that users can capture a wide range of images from landscapes through to tightly framed details.

Thanks to the new Intelligent Digital Zoom feature, however, the F600EXR’s zoom range offers double the telephoto power. With its 30x Intelligent Digital Zoom, even the most distant objects can be turned into frame-filling close-ups, greatly extending the creative uses for the FinePix F600 EXR.

Intelligent Digital Zoom is an enhanced digital zoom function. Cameras featuring conventional digital zoom functionality boost sharpness during processing by enhancing the edges of all objects in the frame. However, this also increases noise in unwanted areas of the image, leading to lower quality results. Fujifilm’s Intelligent Digital Zoom assesses areas of contrast within an image and applies selective processing to the sections of the image where sharpness can be boosted without lowering image quality. This ensures that digital noise is not increased uniformly across the frame so results are much improved.

Improved Sensor Technology = Improved Low Light Pictures

The bespoke ½” 16 megapixel EXR CMOS sensor in the FinePix F600 EXR was first seen in the F550 EXR and combines Back Side Illuminated CMOS (BSI-CMOS) and EXR technologies to deliver superb results across a wide range of lighting conditions. This is thanks to the design of the sensor, which improves light transmission to boost performance, most notably in low light conditions. On the F600 EXR, however, low light results are further enhanced thanks to the improved EXR Auto mode that now offers Motion Detection plus a superior scene recognition range than previous models.

Motion Detection Function
Tackle motion blur with the Motion Detection Function

Motion Detection

The new Motion Detection function enables the FinePix F600 EXR to tackle motion blur on three fronts with mechanical image stabilisation, high ISO sensitivity and the new Motion Detection capability working together. In low light conditions with EXR Auto mode selected, the FinePix F600 EXR will automatically identify if the subject is moving. If it is, the camera deploys Motion Detection and a higher ISO to ensure the subject is captured, blur free. If no subject movement is identified, the FinePix F600 EXR will automatically keep the ISO lower and use image stabilisation for blur free results.

This new functionality is in addition to the EXR sensor’s unique technology. Leave the FinePix F600 EXR in EXR Auto and it will select the best option to deliver great results. But users who prefer to take more control themselves can choose from the following:

  • EXR HR (High Resolution) priority mode is where the sensor utilises every one of its 16 megapixels for the highest quality results.
  • EXR DR (Dynamic Range) priority mode where two images are captured and then merged together to produce superb results on high contrast scenes.
  • EXR SN (Signal to Noise) priority mode in which pixels are doubled up to increase sensitivity and give better results in low light conditions.

Augmented Reality Landmark Navigator – the next level of GPS

Imagine you’re visiting a city that you’ve never been to before. You want to be sure you take in all the famous sites – or you simply want to know where they are in relation to your current location. GPS Landmark Navigator enables you to do just that. The FinePix F600 EXR automatically locates places of interest from its on-board database of around one million locations before displaying these points on the camera’s LCD, showing their relative position, distance from your current spot and type of location depending on a range of category icons. Users can also add and edit location names.

GPS Landmark Navigator

This exciting new feature is offered in addition to the GPS functionality introduced in the FinePix F550 EXR. This includes Photo Navigation to help users to find their way back to a previously-photographed location, and tracking data where users can create a route of their travels – along with pictures taken along that route – once they return home using Google Maps*.

*You need to install “MyFinePix Studio” on your PC to access to this function.

Great Panoramic Shots

A 360° panoramic image of a location makes for a great memory and the FinePix F600 EXR has an enhanced Motion Panorama mode that ensures those memories are even better preserved. With the camera’s 360° panorama functionality, each side of the panorama is connected so you get one – seamless – panoramic shot. No details are missed and you’re assured of recording every single aspect of a location.

Good panoramic shots also rely on a steady grip on the camera and the FinePix F600 EXR’s new rubber coating (only available on Black version) on the front plate will ensure a solid hold, as well as enhancing the overall feel of the camera. Coupled with the high resolution 3.0-inch LCD screen (460K dots), the FinePix F600 EXR all adds up to a fantastic handling experience.

ISO sensitivity up to 12,800
The FinePix F600EXR offers ISO sensitivity up to 12,800

Fantastic Features for Maximum Versatility

In addition to all these exciting new features, the F600 EXR also offers a wide range of picture taking modes that make it the ideal model for almost every photographic occasion.

ISO sensitivity up to 12,800, a full complement of exposure modes including aperture-priority, shutter-priority and manual for creative shooting, continuous frame capture of up to eight frames per second at full resolution, RAW file format, a selection of film simulation modes, and a full-featured integrated flash are just some of the multitude of options available.

For users preferring to capture video footage, the FinePix F600 EXR offers full HD 1080p movie capture with stereo sound and a high speed movie option for freezing fast moving action at up to an incredible 320 frames per second.

I bought this camera while on my way to a Gig at Wembley. I was needing a compact camera capable of taking good low light shots without a flash and I'm glad that after some research I chose this camera.
I normally use a DSLR so my expectations were high but understanding of the limitations using a compact and I frankly was not disappointed. The camera easily took very good photos at the concert and it also provided some decent HD video footage too.
I paid £300 for jessops for this camera in November 2011 but at the same time amazon were selling it for £217, I think "300 was perhaps a little much but £217 is a GREAT price for such a capable little camera.

The camera itself is pretty small for all its able to do. It has a nice big screen on the back and the overall look and build feels good. There is a small rubberized area to allow a better hold on the right hands side which is needed considering the operation of the flash.

On the plus side:
-The photos are nearly as quick to capture as an SLR, making it easier to capture funny pet moments or racing shots.
-The photos are very clear and especially good in low light (I compared the same indoor low light shot with 2 other compacts and my SLR to this one, it was great in comparison!).
-It offers easy ways to attempt more artistic slow shutter / background blur shots (though sometimes this background blur isnt always accurate).
-The battery held out well when I used it at a gig, I'd taken over 400 shots and a 6 minute video with plenty juice to go (no flash mind you).
-The flash is very good for a compact and I found it in no way annoying being a pop up.
-Panoramic mode works well and sweeps for as long as you wish (up to 360)

On the negative side:
-The mode dial is tilted and sometimes I found it had been accidently changed.
-The flash pops up and isnt build in, which I dont mind as it probably explains why the flash is so good compared to other compacts, but sometimes I forgot it was pop up and was puzzled a minute or 2 as to why I couldnt find a flash option LOL (This is just because its new to me and I'll be a pro and remember in future :P).
-The video focus isnt smooth when you're zooming in and out, which isnt a big problem as its quick to refocus again and I didnt find any noise while zooming or anything. [edit: there is a motor noise while zooming, I didnt hear this with a concert being filmed).

As you can see, the negatives for the most part are cosmetic and in no way deter from the fact this camera is very capable.

Overall I'm incredibly impressed with this hand sized gadget. I can even feel confident leaving my DSLR at home often now and using this camera instead.
This possibly is a very small update on the 550, but considering its not far off £200 now, I dont think this is a point worth marking the camera down on, as I see has already happened.
I know its a new camera, but I felt the need to post a review up as reviews by people who dont actually own one aren't helpful.

Photo examples I've taken on the 600exr at the (roxette) concert to show you its ability in this situation. I see many people looking for a good camera to take to gigs, this one could be a serious option :)

I've had several Fuji compacts over the years, the last of which was the F200EXR. The F600 image quality and clarity is several levels better than the F200. Images from both cameras viewed side by side in Photoshop show just how much better the F600 is. I haven't yet compared images with one of my DLSRs to see how it compares with those. I really like that this camera has a RAW image option. I've been working with RAW images from my DSLRs for years now and I'm pleased that I can now get them from my compact.

You get a wider wide angle and a longer zoom. However, at maximum zoom of X15, you will likely have difficulty in holding the camera still unless you find something to wedge it against or a place to put the camera on so you can use the timer.

The controls are fairly easy to use, but I find command dial is sometimes a little awkward and it's not hard to hit one of the direction switches rather than the menu/OK button.

I would have preferred if the flash was internal. I don't care for the pop up flash on this camera. The only saving grace is that the flash seems more powerful than on other compacts I've had.

The memory card slot is badly designed IMO. The way the cover flips up tends to block your ability to remove the card. You can't easily grab it between 2 fingers, and it is just a little fiddly to get hold of the card. I've actually dropped it a couple of times while removing it.

There are a lot of features and settings in the camera. As always seems to be the case with Fuji, the menu system is pretty much useless. There doesn't seem to be any logic as to how it is laid out, and you end up just scrolling through everything until you find what you are looking for. This may become easier with extended use, but Fuji menus have always disappointed me.

As someone who doesn't have a photographic memory. I'm disappointed there isn't a printed user manual supplied with the camera. You get a flimsy set up guide which lists a few of the features, but not enough to fully explain any of them. I quite like having a manual in my pocket in case I need to brush up on what a particular setting or feature does.

I've not used all of the features and settings yet. Some others I'm not really interested in, such as video and GPS. But from what I have tried, I am, for the most part, pleased with this camera. The image quality is superb, and this is always my main priority for a camera. All the bells and whistles are only of secondary importance to me.

I've given this camera 5 stars, but I really would have liked to knock off half a star for the little annoyances I've mentioned above. Due to the excellent image quality, I did not want to knock off a whole star. For me a camera is about image quality and, if that's good enough, I can put up with a few minor inconveniences. A great camera and worth every penny.

Perfect! 30 Nov 2011

This little gem is fantastic. Very small and compact , packed with bells & whistles. Others have complained that the battery runs out quickly, well, provided you switch off the 'Sat Nav' and only use it when required, no problem.

The 360 degree panoramic facility is great, does need a steady hand though. Images are superb even set on the 'basic' EXR choice.

Re the alleged problem with the battery running down, why not buy a couple of extra batteries at £4.95 each and keep them close at hand, the other major camera makers would be touching £20.00 for their extra batteries!!!

Good quality product, nice feel, hard to beat at the price.

Go for it!
