Manufacturer's Description

FinePix F500EXR – the perfect compact, anywhere in the world

Packed with features and loaded with some of the latest technological innovations, the new Fujifilm FinePix F500EXR is set to take the premium compact camera market by storm.

F Series EXR
Fujifilm's Superb EXR Technology helps you take great photos

Following in the footsteps of the award-winning FinePix F200EXR and F300EXR models, this latest recruit to the range is the ideal camera for discerning point-and-shoot photographers or SLR users who want to travel light but don't want to compromise image quality and picture-taking versatility. Superb results are assured with exciting new features including an innovative 16 megapixel EXR CMOS sensor, high speed shooting capabilities, a 15x wide-angle zoom lens, Full HD movie functionality and an improved user interface. With a stylish design and pocketable dimensions, the FinePix F500EXR is set to become the must-have compact in 2011.

Perfect pictures in every situation

Thanks to a brand new hybrid sensor, the FinePix F500EXR delivers extra fast, high quality results in a wide range of lighting conditions. The 16 megapixel sensor developed by Fujifilm is a clever combination of Back Side Illuminated CMOS (BSI-CMOS) and EXR technologies, which delivers superior results to a conventional sensor; particularly under low light conditions, and also offers high-speed shooting facilities and Full HD movie capture.

F Series light
Take brilliant high sensitivty photos

With superior light sensitivity and the triple-layer EXR technology pioneered by Fujifilm in the F200 EXR, the new F500EXR has a sensor that is capable of outstanding results, time after time. Users can still select from the usual three different EXR shooting modes, or simply leave the FinePix F500EXR to choose the best option itself by selecting Auto EXR. Those preferring to take control can pick from:

  • High Resolution mode: The sensor utilises the full 16 megapixel resolution for high quality results that can be printed out at A3-size without the need for any re-sizing using software.
  • Dynamic Range mode: The camera employs dual capture technology to provide a range up to 1600%. Two images are captured and then merged together to produce superb results on high contrast scenes.
  • Signal to Noise mode: Utilises Pixel Fusion, doubling pixels up to increase sensitivity. Coupled with the BSI technology, this mode delivers superb images in low lighting conditions.

Keep up with the action – no matter how fast it's moving

Brilliant Image Clarity
Amazing image clarity even at high-speed.

The FinePix F500EXR isn't just clever; it's quick as well, boasting a range of features that will keep pace with even the fastest moving action without compromising picture quality.

At full 16 megapixel resolution, the FinePix F500EXR will deliver up to 3 frames per second before it has to pause to take a breath. If you want a longer burst of images or a faster frame rate, it can capture 6 frames per second at 8 megapixel resolution for up to 12 frames at 4 megapixel resolution. At these sorts of speeds and resolutions, no other compact camera comes close.

There's also no need to worry about slow auto focusing or shutter lag conspiring against you; the F500EXR's contrast AF system takes no longer than 0.16 seconds to focus. So, it's more likely to be human reactions that fail before the camera, but the F500EXR even has that eventually covered as well with the Best Frame Capture mode. Here, the camera starts recording images from the moment you half-press the shutter release to focus. When you do take a picture, the F500EXR also captures eight frames before or after you’ve taken the shot to make sure you get one perfect image. Friends and family will think you’ve turned into a professional sports photographer overnight.

Huge zoom range, tiny camera

Mega Zoom
Huge zoom in a compact body.

It's a minor miracle that Fujifilm has managed to pack such a high level specification into the FinePix F500EXR’s compact dimensions, but it's even more impressive that the camera also features a 15x optical zoom.

Despite having a body that measures just 22.9mm wide, the zoom range extends from a wide-angle setting of 24mm through to 360mm (35mm equivalents) giving users a huge range of shooting options from sweeping landscapes through to tightly-cropped details.

Search for your favourites in seconds

For users who struggle to find images on increasingly-large capacity memory cards, improved image searching capabilities will come in very handy. Now, searching through thousands of images can take seconds, not minutes. Once you’ve found the shots, it’s easy to put them in to a photobook using the Photobook Assist function where the camera creates the book and tags the images.

Full HD for stunning movies

F movie
Top quality movie capture.

Fujifilm recognises that the world doesn't just revolve around still images, which is why the FinePix F500EXR features high quality Full HD movie capability especially under low light conditions with Pixel Fusion Movie technology. Here, pixels are doubled up to make them more sensitive to low light so it is perfect for the night scenery! Not only does the FinePix F500EXR capture movies in stunning Full HD at 30 frames per second, it also boasts stereo sound for high quality audio and the industry standard H.264 (MOV) format. Favoured by broadcasters and Blu-Ray manufacturers, H.264 (MOV) format produces file sizes that are smaller and more manageable than the conventional AVI format. What's more, they're compatible with a wide range of websites and applications, which makes it easer for users to share content on sites including YouTube.

If it's speedy movie capture you're after, the F500EXR also offers a class-leading selection of high speed movie capture options. F500EXR's incredible 320 frames per second capture at 320 x 112 pixels will be fast enough for any situation. But if it's higher quality you're after, you can also capture the action at 160 frames per second at 320 x 240 pixels or 80 frames per second at 640 x 480 pixels.

    Impressive Camera 13 Sep 2011
    By Lora
    Colour Name:Red
I've had this camera for just over a week now and decided against writing a review until I had taken it out and given it a real test; so with that done here's my review.

When looking for a camera I had some specific requirements: ease of use, a decent zoom, a high ISO and under £200. It was a toss up between this camera and 4 others which were all very similar in both price and specs. I decided to go for the Fuji because it seemed to tick all the boxes and I've not been let down.

    *Ease of Use:
The Fuji camera is a REALLY simple camera to use. It has more settings than you can shake a stick at, including aperture and shutter speed, but the EXR mode comes with an auto setting and so for most point and click scenarios (for the less fussy snapper) that will do the job. The LCD gives you advice for each mode (e.g. telling you to press Menu to change the settings) and on the EXR auto the LCD also tells you the mode it's going into.
Unlike other cameras I played with whilst I was deciding on which to buy, the features of the F500 are all within easy reach with your thumb allowing for fast picture taking.
My only gripe would be the flash popping up, but this seems to be the case for many cameras these days. On the plus side, you can push it down and pop it back up when required.

    *Zoom:
The F500 comes with a 15x zoom. One thing I was worrying about with such a zoom, is that pictures would become fuzzy (one reason I stuck with 15x not 18x); however this doesn't seem to be the case. As long as you can keep the camera somewhat steady the it seems to be able to easily focus within a second or so - this was at max zoom and without a tripod. Needless to say I was rather impressed as the zoom was more of a novelty as I was going from a 3x zoom which for the most part did what I needed. I will however be getting a little tripod because though with gentle movement the camera will still handle it fine, I can see it being more of a issue for steady 15x zoom landscape shots.

    *ISO:
This was big on the list as I disliked using the flash when taking pictures on my old camera as they tend to wash people out; this meant that many of my pictures had background noise or were just too dark. The F500 seems to really come into its own for dim lighting conditions. I've taken many pictures, with lights on and lights off, and for the most part they seem clean and crisp. Yes, in pitch black the camera will need to use the flash but the EXR setting of Signal to Noise mode this meant pictures were nicely lit and not washed out at all. Thumbs up here.

    *Price:
I read somewhere else that for under £200 you will never get the perfect camera, and they are right. I'm sure some people will look at the F500 and pick up on places where it falls down, but for what I wanted this was one of the best options. Since buying it the price has already dropped (typical) but I still think it was a good buy and I'm glad I picked it over other cameras such as the Lumix and Canon, which many people suggested just because of their brand name, but which I turned down because they were harder to use.

    *Other Points:
This camera is small and light compared to some of the other travel zooms I looked at. It also feels like a sturdy camera and rather pretty (I got mine in red). The only downside I can think of is that the supplied wrist strap didn't have an adjustment piece on it, not that I make a habit of dropping things, but I like the safety of having it attached tightly to my wrist. This will be easily fixed by just buying one - I've heard the black Wii remote strap is a good alternative.

The Mode wheel has 8 settings; I'm still not 100% sure what some of them do (though as I said before, the LCD does tell you). EXR mode comes with the 4 sub-modes (auto, dynamic, high res and low iso), then there's a normal auto mode (why they felt the need for 2 I don't know), an Advanced mode that has the 360 panoramic as well as a fancy night time and portrait, the SP mode which you can assign a scene to with the menu button (again, lots to choose from and many I will never use...like cat and dog face). Finally for have the P (Program AE), S (Shutter priority), A (aperture priority)and M (manual) - I'm still playing around with these.
There was a quick start guide in the box and a disk with the full sized manual in PDF - this does explain the modes but like I said earlier, many people will just stick the camera into EXR auto and be done with it.

So, all in all I didn't find any major issues with the F500. If you're looking for a reasonable priced travel zoom camera with a bunch of features squeezed into it I don't think you'll be let down by this camera.

    Hallo,

Bought that for my fiancée to replace old f50.
She loved this at the first sight. She does not like too complicated and sophisticated gadgets. The camera has to do a good pictures and do not pretend a harvester or PC with spaceship dashboard .

    Anyway
Small, light, compact and handy with many features.
    Also nicely finished.
Does brilliant, sharp and colourful pictures. Focus works fast and smooth.
Great wide zoom 15x (24-360mm), I love opening wide 24mm although slightly stretch at the edges of the picture frame and not that sharp close to 360mm. But you can't expect too much from so small lens.

Highly recommended as a pocket camera. I've also large SLR and this little Fuji makes me too lazy to take the SLR out in many cases.
Flash works well as a main light and great as a fill-in.
Above ISO 800 pictures gets little bit grainy. Panoramic feature is just class.

Two things bothers me - devours battery extremely fast (buy a spare) and a slightly weak video in darker conditions. When light is bit dim video gets almost invisibly dark. Our old F50 was much better. In bright conditions works very well.

    However
I strongly recommend this small gem if assume that the camera has to do a good photos not videos in dark dodgy places ;-)

    Regards and enjoy Fuji F500

Compact wonder camera 23 April 2011
    Colour Name:Black
Needed to buy a compact with a decent zoom to replace my Panasonic TZ8 - which I loved using - and saw the Fuji F500 demonstated on a shopping channel. I did some research and decided to buy it but not from the shopping channel - the Amazon price was almost £60 cheaper! I hesitated as I was thinking of buying the new Panasonic TZ20 but it's less than rave reviews swung me towards the Fuji F500.

Compact cameras are my cameras of choice. I have tried larger cameras such as bridge and dslr but compacts suit my style of photography - and I like to travel light.

First I must say how impressed I am by the results I am achieving. I have been using a Nikon P7000 for over six months and this little camera knocks it into a cocked hat! This is no doubt due to the new type of sensor Fuji have used.

I have taken landscapes, macro, indoor etc in various types of conditions ranging from bright noon day sunshine to heavy mist to semi dark interiors and it is rare the camera gives me a bad shot - duff shots usually down to my photography skills rather than the camera I guess.

I used the panorama mode and the result was pleasing. But I have not had time to fully explore all the camera's functions. The past three days I have left the camera in SP mode so I could see how it coped with landscape and outdoor macro images on the automatic settings for these two settings. After adjusting the exposure compensation to minus one third or two thirds depending on the reflected light and the tonal range of the subjects I was able to take excellent shots that astounded me due to the depth of colour and tonal range and the level of details in the images. By the way I have no doubt a decent dslr would better this camera but I don't know of a compact that does beat it for image quality.
