Fujifilm's new 15x superzoom is ideal for those who want more flexibility and zoom range than a compact can offer, but don't want the expense and bulk of a DSLR. The FinePix S1600 has a versatile Fujinon 15x zoom, 28mm wide-angle lens, HD capture and manual photographic controls which give users the freedom for photographic creativity. However, for those whose approach to photography is point-and-shoot, then the S1600 can be left on Auto for total ease-of-use.
With a versatile 15x zoom you can get closer to your subjects without having to move |
Fujinon 15x Optical Zoom & 12 Megapixels
The combination of a high precision Fujinon Lens and astounding 12 megapixel resolution will reveal impressive picture quality. The versatile 15x gives extra photographic reach across a wide range of subjects, from everyday snap shots to capturing the wonders of a family holiday.
Effective Anti-blur System
By combining high ISO sensitivity settings and CCD shift technology the S1600 is able to reduce the effect of camera shake and subject movement to deliver virtually blur-free photos, even when shooting at the full 15x zoom.
Good Low-light Performer
Photos taken in low light are often the most disappointing. The S1600 features impressive ISO sensitivity to 3200* meaning it is ultra-sensitive in dim conditions and able to record impressive detail and true to life colours with minimal noise. You can also select the ISO settings manually, so if it's a nice, bright sunny day you can select a low ISO (e.g. 100), or if conditions are dark, high ISO settings will be better at picking up detail.
*Number of recorded pixels is limited to maximum 3 megapixels. At full resolution sensitivity is limited to a maximum ISO1600.
HDTV-Compatible Photos & Video
Capture both photos and movies (720p) HD format and bring your memories to life. The FinePix S1600 lets you discover the impact of full-screen HDTV image display in the comfort of your home.
*Optional HD Player HDP-L1 is required to view photos and movies on HDTVs.
Intelligent Scene Detection Technology
The FinePix S1600 can detect up to six commonly photographed scenes and optimises focus, exposure and white balance to suit the scene being shot. The scenes it can recognise are: Portrait, Landscape, Night, Macro, Night Portrait, Backlit Portrait. Select SR Auto and let the camera do all the hard work!
Tracking Auto Focus
Ideal when photographing fast moving subjects and action shots, Tracking AF will 'lock on' to moving subjects and keep them in focus. Simply half press the shutter button and Tracking AF will track and keep focus on your subject. As soon as you fully press the shutter button you will capture a photo with the subject perfectly in focus.
Panoramic Shooting stitches up to three photos together in camera resulting in one impressive panoramic shot |
Panoramic Shooting Mode
This mode is great for capturing sweeping landscapes or large group shots. Simply take three consecutive photos of your chosen scene and the camera will seamlessly stitch them together to create one impressive panoramic image and save it straight to the memory card.
Zoom Bracketing Mode
Enables three shots to be taken at the single press of the button, at varying degrees of magnification (original, 1.4x and 2.0x). This enables instant editing on the camera to choose the ideal shot, rather than having to go back to a PC to facilitate a digital crop.
Instant Zoom can follow moving subjects keeping them in focus |
Instant Zoom
A selectable frame on the LCD lets you bracket and track moving subjects in standard wide view and will save it as a cropped image.
Smile Everyone!
Smile Detection will automatically take a photo as soon as a smile is detected ensuring all your pictures are happy ones.
Blink Detection
This fun new feature alerts the user of people blinking in a picture so you have the chance to retake the photo with everyone's eyes open and looking at the camera.
Natural Light and with Flash
Can't decide whether flash is required? Choose this mode, press the shutter and automatically capture the same scene twice: once with high sensitivity and natural light, and the second time with Intelligent Flash. Later choose one or keep both!

Great camera. Very Impressed. Kids love it.,

This review is from: Fujifilm FinePix S1600 Digital Camera (12MP, 15x Wide Optical Zoom) 3 inch LCD (Electronics)
Had been looking at the S1500 but saw this was about to launch so went for the 2010 model. What a fantastic camera for the money. OK, so I am not an expert photographer but needed an upgrade, and this does the business. Great zoom. Clear pictures. Easy to download to the computer. Love the on screen notes, like 'blink detected' and the clarity of the facial shots. Only two blurred shots from my first few days of playing - and that will have been operator error.
The however, and why I haven't given 5 stars is the lack of a manual in English. You get three versions of the manual, and a CD, with the latter in English. OK, so I could download and read, but not when away from home and not wanting to carry around A4 sheets of instructions. The camera is though very easy to use, and the on screen info gives a good clue to the function you are using. Would I recommend it? Absolutely. Very easy to use in auto modes, and the kids also found it very simple.

If all you want is a point and shoot no thought compact this is not for you, However if you are prepared to read the book and try all the functions this is a fantastic camera and will give you the results that are normally associated with cameras 2 or 3 times the price. It will take you a couple of hours to read through and its time well spent, after which it's all down to practice. You don't have to be a camera geek to get excellent results. The camera is well built and robust while being light enough and small enough to carry around easily, the only minus I have found after a year of using mine is it does not come with a lens cover a problem easily over come. I would truly recommend this to any one from first timer up. The instruction book is easy to follow good diagrams and not too much geek speak. I have had numerous cameras over the last 40 years this is certainly the best value. And gives top quality results

Personally I think this is a cracking little camera - I really love it - and its represents great value for money especially as, if you look around, you can find it for just over £100!! ( I just did!) It is really a VERY sophisticated camera with total manual control over all functions including a menu for red-eye removal. and fantastic two stage macro or you can just use auto 'point and shoot' mode.
I have taken some great shots - just last night I sat in my darkened living room post Christmas taking pictures of my 3 cats lolling about using both zoom and flash - great pics for such a camera - they came out great. My only advice to you is DO use Lithium batteries - they are a bit dearer but do last much longer even with high flash use. DON'T bother with the enclosed photo software on the CD. When you connect the camera to your Pc/Laptop it will show a removable drive under 'Computer' in your start menu. Also, if you use the free Google Picasa 3 software it will automatically sync and import your photos (and video's) What we have here is a very compact digital camera with the equivalent of a wide to 410mm zoom lens! That's amazing, the DSLR photographer would have to carry around several heavy - and very expensive lens around with him. I wouldn't be put off either with previous reviewers mention of speckling in low light- if you use the flash YOU WILL NOT see this in your actual photo. I think it is a mildly negative point regarding zoom motor noise when making video recordings - but it needn't be a real problem. You can simply use one of the many excellent video editing programs around such as the one that comes with vista and dub it, do a voice over or record a music track over the video this can be very effective. youtube actually has an editing function which enables you to select a lovely peaceful sound track for any of your videos. Do experiment and bother to get the know it and I think you will be very pleased with it. Paul Edwards
